Here is an interesting view at how stupid the IRS is. They are so stupid they tried to send unpaid tax notices to Robert De-Nero and sent them all to the wrong address and then they claimed that since they were not answered they could just put a tax lien on him.

Mr. De Niro has an estimated worth of over $200 million, and is reputed to spend $125,000 a month on his rental on Central Park West. In that sense, this tax bill doesn't seem so large.

What I am going to say is that when he sent in his taxes in 2013, the check was probable sent in by his CPA and his tax preparer was probably some accountant and the IRS could have just read the tax forms and called him up. However, the IRS is just too stupid. If they cant find one of the most famous icons in the film industry, do you think they are smart enough to handle this ACA business for billions of taxpayers?

So when Mr De-Nero found out there was a tax lien he had a check to pay it in full hand delivered to the IRS. Just think, how much interest the USA lost because the idiots at the IRS are too stupid to look up his whereabouts on Google. How hard did they really look for him?

So how come they have not arrested Mr Sharpton and put a tax Lien on him?

Its Robert freaking Denario. The IRS should just know where famous people are. Change of address forms are for the little guy.

Of course if they had done it that way the OP would be posting some rant about a police state and the IRS being overly intrusive.

Really? So the IRS should follow people around that do not update their address's? I guess you are ok with the extra Taxes that will be required to expand the IRS to make this happen?

well, you're right. This thread is just plain stupid.

Ring-a-ding-dang-doodle! Give that man a teddy bear!

Poor oppressed mega-millionaires! DeNiro's life has been throw all a-tizzy by the evil IRS!

Or not. He probably read about it in the newspapers like the rest of us.

Yeah, I totally get that. When my billing software generates past due notices, I have it setup to cross check tmz.com to see if the invoice needs special handling.

Does it control for duplicates?

Complain to your Republican brethren about the IRS not doing the obvious. It's the Right that's been cutting the IRS budget. As everyone knows, for every $1 "saved" on the IRS, the U.S. government LOSES $6 of tax revenue due to lack of enforement. I mean, just how stupid can the Right be?

If you want the IRS to "give accountants a call" under situations like de Niro's, then perhaps the IRS needs some additional bucks.

Billions? There aren't even a billion people in the US, and there certainly aren't a billion taxpayers in the US.

But yea, they are pretty useless, then again that's the story for most government agencies.

The OP has a point.

Now it's not worth it for an outstanding tax bill of a few thousand $'s, but $6 million outstanding bill doesn't even warrant a phone call? And filing the lien etc cost the IRS money. Pretty poor management.

The IRS DOES send out agents for collection issues. I've seen them go to businesses and people's homes over amounts that were far smaller. Why the branch in NYC can't be bothered about $6M strikes me as odd.

Federal tax lien filing in New York is what $50? Sounds like a more efficient use of manpower and money than going door to door looking for a check.

Plus I'd imagine Bobby is a busy guy, traveling and what not. And I'd also assume it's not easy to just knock on his door.

The irs could have masqueraded as photographers and stood in line at the oscars, then served him in person. Maybe infiltrated the crowd at the SNL anniversary show and stormed the stage.

I call BS on your $50 cost claims. Liens don't get filed by themselves, an IRS attorney had to do it as well as the accompany paperwork etc.

And for you two knuckle heads: Be aware that on page 2 of the Form 1040 the phone number of the person for the IRS to contact is listed.

Like I said, place a dang call.

The IRS made a point of telling people they do not telephone for these matters.
