IRS has a warrant out for your arrest

These scum bags left a message stating: (in a robotic voice)
"We have been trying to contact you and there is a warrant out for your arrest by the IRS. Call 02-864-1221 immediately."

Caller ID shows 'New York 607-756-9642'

Now, I know this is a scam, but, it was left at a 84 year olds answering machine, who was freaking out about hearing IRS & warrant for your arrest, enough to make their blood pressure go through the roof, setting off their monitor.

I am wondering, is there anyway to shut them down quickly, before other people fall for this type of scam ?

Already contacted the AG, and filed a DNC complaint.

I wonder if they are only trying to go after older and more gullible people,
that have only their pensions and social security to live on.

My elderly mother keeps getting those calls too.

I haven't heard of any younger people getting them.

Should be a PSA for everyone with older parents. My grandmother was taken for a few thousand before the fam realized she was on the decline. I check Mom's account every time I do mine.

This might be serious. Look what happened to Al Capone.

Are you certain the IRS isn't looking for you? I mean, have you purchased anything from an online retailer and failed to pay the tax associated with said purchases?

Also put in a complaint for violation of the DO NOT CALL, assuming that they have registered on the DO NOT CALL list. I've seen this group do wonders in shutting down phone mills.

Call the IRS and report it. The IRS can alert the CIA and the FBI, and maybe even the DEA and the NRA, and they'll go down there PDQ and kick their ASS.

Too bad he'll spend 90 minutes on hold to give 30 seconds of information.

The IRS isn't like those other whiny ass departments, they have their own standing army. If they want you, you'll know by the click of the handcuffs.

I heard about a very similar scam going around where people pretend to be calling from US Immigration. That was also in the New York area.

I don't think making DNC complaints is really going to help the situation. I suspect these scammers are either spoofing the number, or using hijacked VOIP systems. I'd definitely let the police fraud squad know about it though.

"Oh wait....hang on, stop. This person here doesn't want to be called. We'd better not."

Now, if Congress would give the people who enforce the DNC List the authority to employ bounty hunters, then maybe that scenario would indeed play out.

There's no federal sales tax, you don't owe them anything for purchases. It would be your state that comes after you for the use tax.

Something similar happened to my mom. Someone claiming to be a credit collector called her and said she had 15 minutes to pay off her balance in full or they are issuing a warrant for her arrest.

She told them that she doesn't know what they are talking about and to wait for me to get home to talk to them. She also gave them my email to email any type of paperwork or information.

They tried calling back a few times but they never sent any information over. It told her next time just give them my number.

Hmm, while this is a scam, I am not sure it qualifies as fraud, since no actual financial damage was done. A case can be made for causing distress though.

You probably call the number and they demand "bail" payable to them. It's not a crank call. They're in it for some sort of monetary gain. Plus, I'm pretty sure impersonating a police officer is illegal.
