IRQs and the Radeon: The saga continues...

Yet another post in the ongoing saga of my Radeon.

I took it over to my friend's apartment last night and hooked it up to his POS 450, don't know if it's a Celeron or a Pentium chip...Anyway, got a solid, stable 40 fps in UT, where my system leaps from 3 (yup, 3) to 70 fps, depending on what's happening.

I am running the game in 800X600 with the 436 patch, using the 7041 drivers for 98SE. I did a complete reformat/reinstall when I got the card.

I'm not looking for any other tweak suggestions (gotten a ton from people, and I thank them). My two possible solutions our that it's my sound card or my IRQs.

I think the Radeon is sharing IRQ 9 with my network card and my sound card. It looks that way in the boot-up screens. I am a complete idiot when it comes to the inner workings of computers. Could anyone tell me how exactly to fix the IRQs so they don't coflict? I am at work right now, but I am going to mess with it tonight.

Also, does it matter if they share in Win2k? My friend said that he didn't think it would, since Win2k is supposed to share IRQs, or something like that.

I am also going to remove the sound card and try it like that as well. That could be the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, I have applied the latest 815e update and my BIOS is version 1003

Just move your pci cards around..Put the sound card in the third slot..

My Radeon Shares with Irq steering only..My Nic and soundcard share Irq's with no problems..
MY 64meg Vivo kicks major ARSE! :)

Just try swapping the cards around should clear it up for you..By the way I don't do any tweaks or overclocking.. The only thing I did was to go to msconfig and remove ATIPOLAB from startup... My Quake 3 fsp is 90+ at 1024.768.32 Looks better than a day at the beach too..

Good luck

PCI and/or AGP devices sharing an IRQ is not a conflict. PCI and AGP were designed to work like this. (Yet still, badly behaved drivers can screw up on this ... but nowadays that shouldn't happen anymore ... keep in mind that the PCI and AGP specifications are six and four years old, respectively.)

So are you using Win2k? I had a problem last week with my new Geforce 2 GTS, where my vid card, sound card, network card, and ATA100 controller were all using IRQ 11. Someone suggested I go into the Device Manager and switch the "Computer" type to Standard rather than ACPI enabled. It worked wonders for my sharing problems.

If you aren't using Win2k, there are a few things you can do to switch em.
