ok, im using an abit kt7-raid mobo and have eliminated the sharing problem between my Dlink 530tx NIC and my soundblaster live!... but... BUT:

why does the VIA VT... PCI to USB Universal Host Controller seem to follow my Dlink NIC around?!?! Im having connectivity issues with my cable modem and I thought it was IRQ confilict between my sound and NIC, but it's still not performing slowly... is there a way to put the via controller on a seperate IRQ? or is this normal for it to keep following my NIC around and sharing with it? I have IRQ 3 and 4 to work with here, but either one i choose, the VIA follows it and shares... hmmph.

any ideas or is is normal?
thanks.

I have a similar setup with no problems. I belive the source may be the SBLive. Look at the abit kt7-raid pdf manual page 68+ or printed manual section 3-7 for info on how to manually override and set up the IRQ configs. Other than that, perhaps I can find out whether the USB intentionally follows the card (perhaps because it is capable of IRQ sharing?). However, debugging IRQ problems remotely is pretty tough any day of the week, so your best bet is to find out how to do the irq reassignments to avoid the problem.

Hope this helps, and sorry I can't be more help at the moment.

few things:
1) im running win98
2) i know how to assign the irqs for anything except the via pci to usb controller! lol... why is it following my nic around like a puppy?
3) it's not the soundblaster live!... that is doing well on it's own irq...

THE BIG QUESTION:
All this is fine by me, if someone can answer me this: WHEN I SURF THE WEB AND DOWNLOAD, MY SYSTEM FLIES.. but in UNREAL TOURNAMENT, I join games that list with a ping of less than 200, but my personal pingrate in the games is 3000-9000! uhhhhhhhg! lol.. any ideas why this is the case?

thanks again.

Some questions:
Which slot has which card?
Is there anything attached to the USB?
Does the boot diagnostic show the NIC sharing with anything else?

1) soundcard is in slot 2 and has no shares/conflicts.
2) NIC is in slot 4 and only shares with the VIA PCI to USB controller as stated previously. No conflicts, and the controller goes wherever the NIC goes IRQ-wise..that's the issue
3) only a zip-250 is in USB...

thanks Again.. any ideas?.. this sucks.. in UT, i cant play but 56k guys can!?!?? lol.. hmmph

in a dos window type something like "tracert www.anandtech.com" without the quotes
this lets you know if its something wrong one of the hops along the way.
this is all i can come up with
why you would get one ping and then another after joining thats 10x higher, i dont know.

If your NIC is in the boards shared slot with USB no matter what IRQ you set for that slot it will still share with USB..the only thing you can do is change slots...

I have had a KT7 Raid but only a short time..but I know there is one slot possibly two that USB will share with..if it follows around to ANY slot on the board then windows is doing it..in bios you should have "PNP OS installed" selected as "NO" to allow BIOS to assign the IRQ..NOT windows.. Try that..

I run linux and had the "PNP OS" option disabled from the start (RH7 is PNP-capable, but it's better to have things uniform). The Linksys is on IRQ 9, the USB on 10. No following. However, I do get strange temp reads with Motherboard Monitor 5 when I have my USB mouse plugged in. But no problems in PS2 mode, so that's what I use. Could be the supposedly problematic implementation of USB in VIA chipsets rearing its head again. The thing is, the problems are not uniformly confirmable.

Nevertheless, Paul's Unofficial KT7 FAQ's instability section has some help on the IRQ and SBLive! issues that may be of help, including a automatic IRQ assignment chart that will allow you to configure the system with automatic IRQ assignements as far as I see.

Regards.
