I've got the Ultra, which lacks features like random play, but when compared to the price or lack of functions of an iPod (depending on what model and how much you want to spend for add ons) or the price of an iRiver, I'm happy. If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the iRiver over the iPod about 1,000 times over. Apple is capable of making the product so much better, but because they can sell assloads the way it is, they won't even try.

Yep.

I think you'll find the general consensus is NOT iPod.

iPods SOUNDS awesome. And look cool.

But I do with my MP3 player what I do with the CD player in the car. I know what's saved in memory. I know what's in the changer's CD magazine. I get bored with the genre and start surfing stations. iPod? Buy an extra FM module.

On my MP3 player, if I have to record a thought real quick, like a phone number, I hit a "record" button and make a quick WAV file. iPod? Buy an extra "voice recorder" module.

My MP3 player uses a standard AAA rechargable that recharges whenever I plug into a USB port to download songs. iPod? Needs an AC adapter and if the battery completely dies I have to order a proprietary battery that costs almost half as much as the player.

And then there's the initial cost of the iPod. Sure it's 20GB, but I don't plan on carrying ALL of my MP3's with me at all times. I can fit six entire albums at 192Kbps in 1MB. That's good enough and at half the price, makes for a decent value.

Sorry.... iPod gets an "e" for effort at best. And don't even get me started on the Shuffle. For $100 I get an MP3 player that doesn't even have an LCD? I've got a Creative Muvo with a broken LCD that can do that that didn't even cost me THAT much! :(

i still don't understand why would people crap on anything that apple makes, while the iriver is the same price (if not more expensive in some cases).

each of them has pro's and con's... it's like a poll of WD/maxtor/seagate. they are all pretty much the same.

Not true. You can buy an iRiver that does what an iPod does AND MUCH MORE for half the price. The difference? The capacity. But capacity is relative. I switch around what I have on my player so much.... I don't WANT more than a few gig of capacity. The more expensive iRivers give you features that iPods will NEVER have (camera? WTF!??! Color display?!! WHY?!?!) and most people could care less about.

iRiver is the clear winner between the two IMHO.
