I dont think they will be able to build the army in the future, American generals wont give them modern weapons, they can use it against us,

That has never stopped the US government training and providing weapons to afghanistan in the 80's and to Iraq AND Iran when they were at war.

Guess they learnt from that huh?

It would have looked the same, had it been an M1 Abrams taking the hit. The javelin carries quite a charge, and the top armor of M1 is notoriously weak. Actually, the Israeli Merkava has better roof armor... due to the fact that they often have to go into urban terrain, and are threatened with RPGs coming from the roofs (which is why M1s are vulnerable in the streets).

But even the Merkava's reactive panels would likely fail against a Javelin.

I think the T-72's record in The Gulf War was 0-613. However, against gangsters & thugs they will be fine.
It's wasn't the T-72 record... it was the Iraqi Army record. They were badly organized, badly trained, and not particularly excited to fight. All-in-all, american army expected at least 10-20% casualties... and wound up with none due to the Iraqi incompetence, as well as american air dominance.

On that terrain against M1s, it wouldn't matter who was operating those T72s. The M1 has a longer range and can fire accurately while moving. The T72 must be stationary to fire a round accurately.

However, Iraq needs some form of armored combat vehicle to deter internal violence, and it will work fine against pretty much anything that rebels could muster. As long as they don't have to face our M1s again, a T72 is all Iraq needs.

Thats what the USA thought when they gave arms to the Taliban.

umm yeah that was like 20 years ago, cause they were fighting the soviets... u have to pick between the lesser of some evils sometimes. And the Taliban, yeah there was a tough nutt to crack, took all of a week and almost no major showing of ground forces on our part....

u can send an original M1 Abrams from just 15 years ago against one of the new M1A2SEP's and the M1 will get its ass handed to it... selling somone 20 year old tech isnt a problem, its selling them the 0-5 yr tech.... like when taiwan wanted the new AEGIS cruisers and destroyers....yeah thats a BIG NO....

Doesn't stop Russia from selling the S-300 missiles to Iran (wtf are they thinking?).

P.S. Saddam was trying to buy some, but didn't complete the deal by the time they were invaded in 2003.
