I just heard on the news that the Iraqi army just deployed it's first tank unit. Did we give them some M1's, or did they recycle some Soviet tanks?

They are T72's.

"Dempsey spoke after a ceremony Thursday officially delivering 77 Hungarian-donated Soviet-era T-72 tanks to the Iraqi army, giving the force its most formidable armor so far. Loudspeakers played music that would be familiar to members of Hussein's army -- including "We Are Walking to War," the anthem to which hundreds of thousands of Iraqi men went to battle against Iran in the 1980s."

The Iraqi tank!

I hope they remembered to order some fuel trucks.

If they recycled their old soviet tanks, they could be a regional power again.

But the modern US tanks could accurately hit Iraqi tanks at a range greater than an Iraqi tank could
even shoot.------big problem in open terrain when you can't hide your tank so that one can get into kill range.-------as we used to do with the old Sherman's in ww2.----usually it took the massed fire of three or four Shermans to get one German tank.

The Shermans aquired the nickname of Ronsons----because they lit up every time they were hit.

If they are ever going to be a serious fighting force they have to have tanks. I think this is a positive step.

I dont think they will be able to build the army in the future, American generals wont give them modern weapons, they can use it against us,

Soviet equipment is much cheaper than western equipment. And for what its intended role is a T-72 is fine. If the shat really hits the fan I bet you will see American tanks in action.

And training is probably half the battle. Read about the 67 war and how the Israelis used WWII era shermans to knock out the nwest Soviet equipment. I also heard the Syrians sent an entire division of tanks to their death in the golan heights from Israeli tank ditches. Just kept sending the tanks not understanding what was happening.

Equipment doesnt always make the fighter.

I heard they are much safer now . They have been retrofitted with anti-lock brakes and side impact airbags.

I think the T-72's record in The Gulf War was 0-613. However, against gangsters & thugs they will be fine.

It's wasn't the T-72 record... it was the Iraqi Army record. They were badly organized, badly trained, and not particularly excited to fight. All-in-all, american army expected at least 10-20% casualties... and wound up with none due to the Iraqi incompetence, as well as american air dominance.

That has never stopped the US government training and providing weapons to afghanistan in the 80's and to Iraq AND Iran when they were at war.

Guess it depends on who you're talking too. To an American M1A1 crew, most certainly! However I think most Army Infantry and Marine Riflemen would disagree. Ambush with hidden tanks is no joke to grunts, WWII taught us that.

I agree though, I'd much rather be in a Challenger II or Abrams!

Iraq's economy will be great in 10-20 years if the U.S helps them.

They will then have the ability to buy billions worth of new technology.

Afghanistan will always remain poor (sadly). T-72s will be like Ferraris over there.

T-72s can be deadly if they are hidden (like in cities).

If they are in the open vs U.S tanks.. bye bye.

Saddam's army was very good (not great). They just didn't expect the U.S to bomb their army from the air.
They also couldn't hit the enemy because their range was too short.

The rest of the world now knows not to mess with U.S forces out in the open. Iraq learned the hard way.

Is the range upgraded for the newer T-72s? The upgraded T-72s.

They are new t-72's, with upgradded electronic packages, donated by Ukraine
