For me, right now, the link goes to a late breaking story that Iraqi kidnappers threaten to kill an American civilian hostage.
"Up to now your prisoner is being dealt with in the tolerant manner specified by Islamic law. Our one request is to break the siege of the city of the mosques (Falluja) during the 12 hours from six o'clock on Saturday evening," a voice on a tape shown on Qatar-based Al Jazeera said.

"If not, he will be dealt with worse than those who were killed and burned in Falluja," the voice added in the tape, which also showed the man in front of an Iraqi flag.

Alright! Nice to hear some semi-humane news in the midst of all this carnage. :)

I hope it's true. It's good to see some humanity popping up in these awful times. Although I still feel bad for the other remaining hostages. Thumbs up to those Muslim clerics.

This is indeed good news if proves to eventually happen this way. Yesterday at 3:27 p.m. in the thread below I flatly predicted that the Japanese would not be burnt to death. I don't mention this to tout my predictive ability. I mention it to show the power of the myth of "the other." Of course no one from our side would willingly burn three hostages to death alive, but many people on the thread below seemed to have not a bit of trouble believing it.

I'm making this because I want bragging rights later. I forget who was the twit on this board who said "serious Al Queda attack on us by mid ???? . It was a Muslim holiday in mid Feb or March. Too bad we can't tax twits.

Seldom has a prediction been more accurate. The point is, although there are many factions fighting us in Iraq, some of them are quite sophisiticated and you lose more than you gain by incinerating hostages. This reasoning applied to the young Japanese peace workers. It does not apply to contractors and security personnel.

She is proud Sward. But more to the point, I've always said the U.S. does not have the interest, talent, or resources to make Iraq succeed. It was a pest-hole when we came. It will be a pest-hole when we leave. Half this board thought the Iraqis would b e welcoming us with flowers.
