Bush requests more war, hurricane emergency money

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush asked Congress on Thursday for $72.4 billion in emergency funds for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as the pace of spending on the conflicts increased.

Bush also sought $19.8 billion for the hurricane-battered U.S. Gulf Coast, which would push relief after Hurricane Katrina to some $90 billion.

"This request provides the resources necessary ... so the Coalition can continue to hand over control of more territory to Iraqi forces," Bush said of the war funding request.

The Pentagon would get $65.3 billion to finance the wars, while additional funds for Iraq and Afghanistan aid and operations would go through the State Department and $2.9 billion would go to intelligence operations.

Bush also sought money for aid for the humanitarian crisis in Sudan's Darfur region, earthquake relief in Pakistan, promoting democracy in Iran and other uses overseas.

With this package and the $50 billion the White House said it will seek for early next fiscal year starting on October 1, the wars' costs will pass $440 billion, and likely will approach $500 billion by the end of next year, mostly for Iraq.

The cost for the wars this year will be about $111 billion, up from about $100 billion last year, White House and Pentagon officials said in a conference call with reporters.

Iraq operations are costing an average of $5.9 billion per month, and Afghanistan an average of $900 million, they said, attributing the higher costs partly to higher fuel prices.

I believe that brings the total for both Iraq and Afghanistan to 400 billion with almost all going for Iraq. And it is expected, according to news reports on virtually every station, that another 50 billion will be requested for the coming year. It seems they didn't want to ask for all 125 billion for the year at once.
Remember how the Bushies said it would cost 50-60 billion tops? Remember how they ridiculed and even fired anyone who said it would cost more?
Any corporate ceo who misjudged so badly would have been long gone. And new avenues would be explored to get the job done more effeciently and quickly.
But we still have the same idiots who so badly misjudged so many things still sticking to their flawed plans.
Where's a flip-flopper when you need one?

That's why people in the US need to get of our arses and start complaining about this blantant corruption and wasting away our future. If the citizens of the US don't wake up and force thses people to be more responsible, we will be saying "Yes Sir, China"

DOD spent $635B in fiscal 2005 and has an accounting structure that is so dysfunctional that they've given up trying to fix it.

Bush is the worst President ever . . . at least Grant had an excuse . . . he was drunk.

Heard this on NPR this morn. Absolutely pathetic! They LOST $8 Billion and got robbed by contractors for who knows how much, and now they need another $70 Billion to compensate? This is the most ill-conceived, ill-advised, ill-managed, ill-run, ill---uh, im going to be ill. Wheres my $500 million bridge to nowhere anyway?

and americans just seem to blindly accept it

face it, this nation is flying thru the air without a safety net. it's gonna be a hard thud once we come down

Bwahahahahahahaha

Bush has the audacity to cut tens of billions of dollars for higher education, and pisses it all away on $40 cases of soda in Iraq.

Thank you Bush and thank you cronies! We truly feel safer now (even though the list of terrorists has quadrupled since we invaded Iraq).

The crooks in Congress have kids too, that need cushy jobs as consultants for big military suppliers & mystery contractors.

They lost that cash a long time ago. Ths administration is following the "hands off" policy. Why try if you don't have to? I guess that's the new motto.

Why should they care? It is not their money that they are spending. Hell if I have controll in 3 branches of the gov, i'll give away money to anyone that support me. Who are you to stop me? /sacrasm.
