Lets face it, if we were forced to gice up oil any time in the next 25-50 years, we would be dead, as a socity. All air travel would come to a stop, most shipping would end, consumer goods production would be devistaited, roads could not be buitl (though what would be the point, since there is no way alternative fuels could be implemented fast enough), power proudction would be cut until more nuclear, gas and coal plants could be built. Life as we know it would siece to exist. WE NEED OIL TO LIVE-- with out oil food prouction and distrubtion would collaps. In addation, we would be faced with a misive nucler wast probalmm, as nuclear power plants and shipping would massivalley expand.
I am intresed in this suposidaly massive Canadian oil field, I have not head abnything about it. Anyone have any solid information it? I know there is a massive oil supply in the caucus(?) region, but no way to get it out to the world.

here is a couple links i found in regards to alberta oil:

quick quote:

Q: How much oil does Alberta's oil sands contain?

A: The four major oil sands deposits in Alberta contain more than 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen. Using current technology this could potentially be turned into over 1 trillion barrels of synthetic crude oil, although much of the bitumen probably cannot be recovered at a reasonable cost (with current technology only 300 billion barrels are recoverable). The Athabasca Oil Sands is the largest of these oil sands deposits. It contains over one trillion barrels of bitumen on its own, although only about 300 billion barrels of bitumen can be recovered using current methods of mining. There are other large oil sands deposits in Canada as well, most notably a large deposit on Melville Island in the Canadian Arctic. It is Canada's next largest oil sands deposit after the Athabasca Oil Sands. It has the potential to produce about 500 million barrels of crude oil.

By comparison, Alberta's conventional oil reserves are currently estimated at about 4.5 billion barrels of oil. Put another way, the Athabasca Oil Sands contain more oil than all the known reserves in Saudi Arabia. Clearly Alberta's oil sands hold the key to the long term production of oil and oil products in Alberta, and as time goes by more and more of Canada's oil needs will have to be met by Alberta's oil sands deposits.

hey tontod you need to check your facts better. There is enough oil in the Alsakan National WIldlife reserve to replace the amount of oil we get from Iraq for over 20 years. True there is not an unlimited supply, and true we will still need to import, but it would be a good idea to ween ourselves from dependance on Iraq.

Pika, its their oil, period.

Lets suppose the US controlled the world's supply of oil. Given the fact that the US uses more oil than any other country in the world, do you think they'd be willing to share it??? HELL NO.

<<Oh really? Just because their crap ass country happens to be located over some of the worlds richest oilfields, which are a neccessity of the modern world, means they have the right to do whatever they want with it, including deprive the rest of the world of it?>>

That makes absolutely no sense. Regardless of who needs it, or why they need it, it's their oil, not ours. If we've grown to the point of being dependent on their oil, then that's our problem - we need to address that dependence or find alternatives.

If countries simply start taking what they want, the world will descend into chaos very quicly.

Piku I kind of find your approach a bit worrisome. I agree that Iraq sucks. I agree that our society relies heavily on oil. However, it is still theirs. Their sitting on it means exactly that - that it is theirs. According to your argument the US could invade Canada to get Alberta's oil if we said no. Is that right? What if some gold mine in North Dakota suddenly is found to have all this gold and the rest of the world wants it. Should they be able to invade for that?

Oil is only a necessity in modern society because we made it that way. As was mentioned it isn't a _total_ necessity like air, water, food, shelter is. If Iraq was the last country in the world with oil I think that would suck but invading them would still be wrong. Alternate energies do exist - oil users just think oil is the easiest and so they've never bothered to really harness alternate energies - that is the only reason it is now a necessity. A couple hundred years from now the modern world will rely heavily on renewable energies; its our own fault we rely so heavily on oil.

You say that oil is a necessity, but to what degree? If Iraq wants to sell it for $300 barrel would that make it ok for us to take it? Necessity is all relative. $300 barrel almost nobody would be able to drive a car around. Who decides where the price is fair? The seller does. I could say that $300 barrel is ridiculous for our "needs" and we invade. Another person could say that the current prices are ridiculous and they should be lower yet.

I will likely be moving to either Ontario or Alberta in the near future. I think Alberta is going to be a very rich province in coming years 🙂

<< For example, there is enough oil in Alaska to last maybe a couple of years. >>

..that's bullcrap!

The proposed new drilling in Alaska would eliminate the problem with Iraq.

Modern Society MUST HAVE an inexpensive energy to survive. I'll be happy to debate our survivability without oil anytime! More Liberal in Charge Of Public Education crapola!

Are you reeeeeeeaady?!?

Bush is gonna bomb Saddams ass into the floor for this one.

So who's down for some good old fashioned imperialism? If they dont want to sell it, lets take it.

Remember, US got involved in the gulf war because of the oil. If it was some other contry with no abundunt natural resources, US would have kept itself out of it.

True, but they were still able to hide behind alterior motives (and I don't believe it was ONLY because of the oil - look at Kosovo crisis back in '99 - there was no economic motivation as large as oil and the US still committed to it).

I remember we had a treaty with Kuwait..oil for protection.

Sadaam claimed the oil in the region was 'His.' We showed him he was wrong...

I'm not normally one to cast aspersions, but I can't help but think Piku is a prime candidate for a lobotomy. Or at the very least sterilization. It's attitudes like that that make us the most hated country in the world. People don't burn US flags in other countries by coincidence. It's because of that kind of arrogant rhetoric. I'm sure you'd appreciate if Iraqis called the US a "crappy ass country". In fact, they are demanding that we sell them certain necessities and we are refusing. Do you know what irony is?

And we get less than 5% of our oil from Iraq, so it hardly affects us at all.

I think we should do what Mr. Burns did on that episode of the Simpsons.. build a big long pipeline in Kuwait and slant it so it sucks out all the oil on the Iraqi side.. hehe.. who needs a war? 😀

<< You may not live like your used to living, but there are plenty of isolated cultures that still farm and hunt and have no need for oil. >>

whatdo you think runs tractors?

what do you think did the farming before the combustion engine was invented?

Let's nuke the world, let's take over all natural assets in the entire world... YES, world domination!!!!

If they do not want to sell it at the price we are offering, then we just nuke them! Sometimes i wonder how old you guys really are...

It is their oil, if we want it, we have to pay them what they want to get it, is that really so strange?
