If Arabs united they wouldn't have to deal with the West pushing them around anymore. They control a lot of oil. They can buy weapons from Russia and China and arm themselves.

Agreed. They also need to worry about providing opportunities for their own citizens and allow democracy to form naturally. Trouble is, the uber-rich and powerful just don't want to give up their stranglehold hold on power.

Google for April Glaspie, first of all.

Also, Iraq's economy was devastated by the long-running war with Iran. Kuwait and other nations began pumping more oil and lowering prices around 1990. There are some reports/articles to suggest the US was complicit with these nations to further destabilize Iraq although I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind this. Perhaps it was to cover up the US's involvement in providing Saddam with arms, bio/chem weapon precursors, and intelligence on Iranians troops locations. Perhaps it was to set the stage for what we're experiencing now. The subsequent investigation and downfall of BCCI uncovered a lot of corruption and terrorist funding courtesy of the US gov't (thank Sen. Kerry for his involvement in investigating BCCI)

Also, the US supplied the Saudis with FAKED satellite photos showing Iraqi troops amassing along the Saudi border. Russian satellite photos from the same time showed nothing of the sort.
