Looks like about a dozen or so ships transiting today. Mostly outbound.

Edit: Reportedly the USN is trying to move combatants into the Gulf while we're still trying to get the talks started. Great start guys.

Freedom of navigation exercise. The US warships did cross the strait and then went back out. This could be a demonstration to eventual deployment of LCS to sweep the strait for mines.

welp I guess that was a long trip to nowhere

The Iranian leaders are a crazy evil bunch - when it comes to their religious conservative fervor, misogyny, and disgusting domestic authoritarian abuses - but when it comes to international affairs - Trump and his MAGA negotiators are the crazier ones - and by a long shot. They are totally insane and ignorant.

But this is what I wonder - is it when, and not if, Trump gets the advice from the right person, or persons, at the right time who say, nobody will respect you until you take the leash off of military action by air and unleash hell. And that is when shit will hit the roof, drawing the rest of the world into this.

The juxtaposition of Vance in Pakistan trying to “negotiate” and Trump with Little Marco at a fight event is quite profound.

I like to apply the what if Obama did this test.
For instance, during the original negotiations in 2015, what if Biden was the face of the negotiation, and Obama is just going to basketball games.
The entire right wing media sphere would’ve had an eruption the size of a Yellowstone Supervolcano.

This deserves condemnation from any serious person, but we will hear nary a peep from the politicians and the influencer mouthpieces.

^ that is the long way of describing it. The short way: it is a fucking embarrassing disgrace.

To be fair though, can you imagine the sheer volume of cock-ups Donald would make? He'd be constantly diverting the topic to talk about how great/victimised he is, making basic factual errors that a kid in primary school wouldn't make if they had to do a presentation that involved say basic geography of the area in question, mangling the pronunciation of peoples' names and place names, making suggestions that anyone with a postage-stamp understanding of the topic would know not to bother making, making concessions or demands that anyone with a postage-stamp understanding would avoid making, or criticising the outfits of the guys from Iran and Pakistan because they don't conform to his notion of what 'suitably dressed' means, the list goes on. That's aside from his tendency to fall asleep and/or gassing the room.

"No-one knew that peace in the Middle East could be so complicated!"

Honestly at the point where the next Dem presidential candidate I vote for has to promise to send the B-2s to visit Tel Aviv.

I'd settle for a DOJ that fully cooperates with Israeli courts in putting Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud cronies in prison.

The unfortunate truth is the Israeli citizenry is also pretty unhinged when it comes to what they think they should be able to do to their neighbors. The bloodthirsty political leadership they keep empowering is a reflection of this fact.

21 hours of negotiation. Between two counties at war, sounds like a solid effort /s

Geez. These guys - no follow up meeting set, nothing. It's all or nothing. There a people in psych wards with longer attention spans.

I guess it's like our MAGA problem. The 30 million or so US voters who are ultra right and believe Trump can do no wrong. I wonder if the same mechanisms were at play over there as here.

The proportion is much larger over there, it's easily a majority view. They've been sheltered from diplomatic and military consequences for so long by the US they feel entitled to do whatever they want regardless of our own interests.
