Iran's biggest-selling newspaper has chosen to tackle the West's ideals of "freedom of expression" by launching a competition to find the 12 "best" cartoons about the Holocaust, the Associated French Press reported on Monday.

Oy Vey, that's new! Don't you dare post cartoons about the Holocaust, or else Jews all over the world will rise up and set Iranian embassies on fire...

Idiots.

Their goal is to make europe hate them as much as possible. I'm sure that's going over like a load of bricks in germany.

Lets not forget the US urged Iranians to boycott the recent elections.
So instead of a moderately extremist president, Khatami, the ultra extremist candidate won.
It is almost difficult to comprehend that the US is partly responsible for the Iranian mess.
And if the Iranians think that the average european gives a sh*t about Jews they are just not thinking clearly.

Well . . . technically that's progress.

Papers detail popular and unpopular beliefs and opinions. Some of which are quite tasteful while others deserve no more light of day than the amount necessary to toss it in the garbage.

Hopefully, the response from the Jewish (and nonJewish) press is to publish even MORE points of view.

I'm not sure we directly "urged" a boycott. I think most decent reformers were poisoned by association with US tripe.

For the record, I think Iranians decided Khatami had quite a few years to do something . . . during which he did next to nothing . . . so they stayed home. One of the truly great benefits of a less than democratic society is that if one guy sux and the other guy is a nut . . . why bother?

The "President" of Iran must be on a suicide mission. I can't wait to see how the right wingers in Israel react to this guy once the new government takes power. I just love how it always becomes a Jewish issue to these demogogues- especially when it has nothing to do with them.

One wonders how the Israelis have tolerated moderation, its time for the world to see the type of people they are fighting so that they are given the chance to fight with their gloves off for once.

Don't you get it? The idea of posting cartoons about the Holocaust - the so-called myth as they call is - is nothing new in the Islamic world; they have been doing it for years. Why haven't we heard about any Jewish riots you say? Well, do I really have to tell you why?

Clearly, this is the same ongoing "blame the Jew" symptom. Such a childish response, but not surprsing if you look at history.

Yeah, that's the spirit!

Let's all just become as extreme as these evil "demogogues" we like to criticize!

Nah, how about "Lets face reality instead of always making excuses for demogogues that are experts at doublespeak and have no desire to make peace with anyone that doesn't conform to their fundamentalist views"

It is nice and dandy not to lower yourself to their level. But it stupid and dangerous not to recognize the threat that they pose. It is even more stupid to not protect your best interests because biased agencies such as the UN promise to slap you around for protecting your country and citizens.

Well, I must admit. I don't get it. Last time I checked Jews don't riot very often for several reasons:
1) Uh, most large collections of Jews are in Israel or a NYC kosher deli. The latter usually complain about the gefilte broth but that's not a rioting offense.
2) Most of the published press worthy of reading are so afraid of the anti-semite slur that they wouldn't dare publish anything too overtly "Jewish."
3) Jews work so only Sabbath would be available . . . and the mother-in-law has already claimed it.
4) Should I go on . . .

Who cares if random Iranians, Muslims, or Arabs "blame the Jews?" If you think it's so childish . . . why play along by noticing so hard? Considering how this thing started . . . a publication in September 2005 . . . I would treat them like any other tantrum child; no dessert, banishment to time-out, and no attention.

Khatami was a weak lil bastard.

The current Iranian President might be fanatical, but he has balls to get what he wants done.

Khatami was the mullah's bitch.

Also I dont know about the claims that the U.S helped get the current Iranian President elected by telling people not to vote.

The Iranian President had a great political campaign.

*end corruption in the govt.
*more money for schools, education

If I was in Iran I would have probably voted for him too. He promised to help put an end to the millions of dollars the mullahs steal from the economy. No more rich government employees he promised. Not until everyone can afford a Mercedes.

The elections weren't like the U.S with two people running. Hundreds of people ran.

So the Iranian President didn't get even close to 50% of the vote, but he beat all the other 100+ candidtates.

Only then when he was elected did he start preaching his wacky ideas.

keep in mind also that many people were blocked from running. The government didn't want the reform party to win so they blocked hundreds of them from running for many posts.

This is far from a true democracy.

Oh boy, the "War of the Cartoons". If this makes them feel better, more power to it. Maybe this is a first step towards freedom of speech? Yeah, right.

I posted on this before. The US, including Condi Rice, and all our voice of america, etc news outlets urged Iranians to boycott the election. I think even Bush urged the boycott.
And while the Iranian election wasn't "free" it was more free than the Egyptian and Saudi elections which Bushie keeps saying were such great things.
In fact the mullahs in Iran may have the last say on things but the secular government has a lot of say in how the government is run.
In Iran the people had 'some' choice where in Saudi Arabia and Egypt they had no choice.
Khatami may have been bad but the new pres. is a maniac.

Send in the drones.

If they crave the life of a lunatic fringe, lets just give up and bomb them.

The only thing saving them is that they have oil.

We could just drop persistent nerve gas or a biological agent that just sticks to everything.

All we have to do is use some cruise missles.

I hope this spreads to the Best (insert ethnicity here) jokes. As I could probably submit a few for both sides.

I want to see this one in the Iranian paper:

An Iranian nuclear Physicist says to an Israeli spy, here's where we're making the modern day Holocaust for the Jewish state. "Right here under the seat of the Iranian government? How interesting!", comes the reply.
