I think we helped it fail. Most likely it would have failed on its own anyway, but the question is how long would that have taken?

Carter essentially left the Soviets alone and even tried to make nice with them via SALT II.
Reagan on the other hand pushed at them and made life difficult.
I think he certainly helped them along in their defeat.

Actually it looks like he said "And the left likes to claim the Soviet Union fell on its own..." Which to me means that we played a part in the downfall of the Soviet Union. There is not just one single thing that made the Soviet Union fall....

Actually it looks like he said "And the left likes to claim the Soviet Union fell on its own..." Which to me means that we played a part in the downfall of the Soviet Union. There is not just one single thing that made the Soviet Union fall....

US helped it along but more in the way that it convinced Gorbachev of the insanity of their system, and not as much in bringing down the Soviet economy, as having a good economy for Soviets to compare their basket case to and draw appropriate conclusions. Once Gorbachev instituted Glasnost, then people could speak out against the system and say, hey, we want to live like Americans too, we don't want to wait 2 hrs in line to buy bread.
Ultimately, if Gorbachev didn't bring it down, it may still have been going, though well past its prime by repressing its people. Economic hardships alone don't end such regimes, just look at North Korea.

Did you read the link? Didn't think so.

Not a single CIA source was cited. The story came from outside sources, many of whom are not in the US. In fact, I don't see where anyone directly affiliated with the US government is cited in the link. I'm sure the CIA would prefer to have kept this a secret.

Now, refocus your disgust where it belongs and laugh along with the rest of us at Iran getting scammed like a n00b in a chatroom.
