Beat, beat, beat go the drums!!

WASHINGTON ? In what is being called a serious provocation, Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, officials said Monday.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats ended the incident and turned and moved away, said a Pentagon official.

"It is the most serious provocation of this sort that we've seen yet," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as a U.S. Navy cruiser, destroyer and frigate were transiting the strait on their way into the Persian Gulf.

"Five small boats were acting in a very aggressive way, charging the ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and causing our ships to take evasive maneuvers," the Pentagon official said.

"There were no injuries but there very well could have been," he said, adding that the Iranian boats turned away "literally at the very moment that U.S. forces were preparing to open fire" in self defense.

He said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but the Iranians radioed something to the effect that "we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes."

Historical tensions between the two nations have increased in recent years over Washington's charge that Tehran has been developing nuclear weapons and supplying and training Iraqi insurgents using roadside bombs _ the No. 1 killer of U.S. troops in Iraq.

In another incident off its coast, Iranian Revolutionary Guard sailors last March captured 15 British sailors and held them for nearly two weeks.

The 15 sailors from HMS Cornwall, including one woman, were captured on March 23. Iran claims the crew, operating in a small patrol craft, had intruded into Iranian waters _ a claim denied by Britain.

Edit: Just in case my sarcasm up top doesn't qualify as adding anything to the thread.....

Is this a last ditch effort by the pro-attack anything Middle Eastern crowd so prevalent within this administration before they get the boot?

Topic Summary: Are those war drums I hear beating???

no, your bass is turned up too loud.

the US is nowhere near even seriously thinking about thinking about a war with Iran at this stage of the game.

Just looks like the Iranian Revolutionary Guard screwing around again.

They probably bugged out when it looked like the USN was seriously thinking about lobbing some 5 inch shells into their little patrol boats.

Yeah cause those barbaric Iranians tortured the shit out of those British soldiers. We all saw the pictures of them being forced to stand naked while dogs were allowed to scare the piss out of them. We all saw the pictures of them being forced to do naked pyramids. We all saw the pictures of the beaten captured laying bloody and dead on the cold, wet cement.

Oh wait, those were the pictures of what WE did to people that we captured. The pics of the British that I saw showed them playing ping-pong.

From the story it looks like the Iranian?s were the one causing the problem. How can you call this some last ditch effort to attack something?

Are you that paranoid or stupid?

BTW we could have just sunk the boats and left Iran to cry to the UN about it.

From the British accounts they were in international waters. From the Iranian accounts they were in Iranian waters. All vessels were left to fight another day so there is only a they said/we said account.

If the US would have sunk any/all of the Iranian boats, there would have been conclusive evidence one way or the other as to where this "incident" took place. Maybe the fact that there would have been indisputable evidence was more of a factor than restraint?

How can you declare that this is NOT a last ditch effort to attack when you have only the word of an administration and a defense department that have shown a track record of conveniently changing the facts to fit their agenda or cover their collective asses?

Yes, we get it. You cannot dispute facts so you resort to rhetorical hyperbole and questioning the patriotism of others instead of a reasoned response to make even an attempt to quantify your OPINION.

Question for you....

Has the US ever done a single thing wrong in your OPINION? Be careful, this is a trick question. If you answer yes, you are an America-hater by your very own definition. If you answer no, you are a completely blind partisan idiot by everyone else's.

He is probably implying that the story is either exaggerated or not true at all, just something to drum up support for military action against Iran. This is something which of course would not go without precedent in American history... Gulf of Tonkin for example...

I assume you speak of the Iranian defense department that gave GPS coordinates for the British incident and then realizing that the ones they gave put the event in international waters tried to change their story?

How would you feel if the police busted down your door and threw your ass in cell for a week and threatened to throw you in with the general population if you didn?t admit to a crime you didn?t do and then at the end of the day let you go with some nice flowers and a photo op with the police chief?

My point about sinking their boats was hyperbole. The idea is that we could have sunk those ships and then went about our merry way and it is very unlikely that Iran would have or could have done anything about it. The only reason those Iranians are alive today is because we have strict rules of engagement and some navy captain didn?t want to ruin his career over a few guys in speed boats acting like assholes.

The Iranians first provided coordinates that confirmed the British story. After they got called out on that fact they provided (more likely fabricated) a second set that were in Iranian waters.

Iranian patrol boats seem to often act provocatively. This is just another example not some grand plan by Bush to start a war with Iran.

^Let?s not forget the fact that a week or so before taking the Brits hostage the Iranians tried to do the same thing to another countries naval forces, luckily those guys acted aggressive and scared the Iranians off.

So we now have three separate stories about Iranian patrol boats acting badly and yet we are to believe that this is all part of an effort by Bush to drum up support for an attack on Iran.

This is why you probably would not make a good judge... Once the prosecutor makes his statements against the defendant you immediately scream GUILTY! before even considering the defendant's position

Cry me a river.

If the right insists that the left is "invested in defeat" by the terrorists then by extension it follows that the right is "invested in the success" of the same terrorists.

Turnabout is fairplay.

I am tend to think RightIsWrong has it nailed but I will reserve judgment until better facts come in. Normally, anything within 12 miles of the coast would be indisputably Iranian waters but the straights of Hormuz could make the questions dicey. I suspect the whole thing is a reminder to our Navy to stay out of Iranian waters.

And anytime tensions are high, both sides will push the limits. Ya our Navy could have blown those boats out of the water but those same US navy ships are right in the sights of Iranian
missile emplacements that line the Iranian coast for hundreds of miles.

As it is, cooler heads prevailed, so for both sides, its back to the game of pushing the limits.

This is why you shouldn't assume. I was speaking of the Pat Tillman incident. I was speaking of Hiditha. I was speaking of numerous other examples where the military has given accounts of situations that they patently knew to be false to save face and/or promote an agenda.

You forgot the pics of them kissing Achmadinija's ass which I'm sure is something that every British sailor longs to do.

The pictures that were released by the Iranians of the captives were all staged, because if the captives could have said and act like they felt like, they would probably include in their sentences a lot of "fuck you" and "Iran" and "we should kill every last one of these Muslim fanatic scum bags" etc.
I have no doubt as you should to, that if it wouldn't have served Iranian interests at the time these poor sailors would've been brutally tortured and killed.
Iran is a country that tortures and kill its own civilian what the fuck do you think they do to enemy soldiers? (hint: they don't abduct them and take them to ping-pong summer camps)

You fail at either:
1. Understanding reality.
2. Spreading your propaganda.
