The only thing prolonged is nation building. That's a task that never ends. Our morons in charge are quite fond of such heavy losses, but I assure you they are not necessary.

Military victory is another matter, and for us would be quite sudden and decisively in our favor.

Agree - America would be idiotic to put boots on the ground in Iran and invite a never-ending insurgency.

However, anyone doubting America's ability to turn Iran's air/land/sea forces into debris is fooling themselves. Once missiles start flying, the US and allied forces will lock down anything that tries to fly, whether it be on the coast or 100 miles inland.

In the past, dozens of speedboats might have had a chance of surprising a support vessel, but these days that'd just be cannon fodder.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran is planning new military exercises near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to a naval commander, after threatening to close the strait and completing another set of maneuvers.
One sixth of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's threat to close the passage if the West imposes sanctions on its own oil exports unsettled an already nervous world oil market.
The semiofficial Fars news agency late Thursday quoted the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's naval commander, Adm. Ali Fadavi, as saying that the upcoming exercise would be the seventh staging of an annual drill called "The Great Prophet."
Fadavi said the next round of war games would be "different" from previous ones. He did not elaborate. The admiral said the drill would take place in the Iranian month of Bahman, which roughly corresponds to February.

Casting aside current tensions between the U.S. and Iran, the U.S. Navy on Friday rescued 13 Iranian seamen who were being held captive by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Oman.

A Navy helicopter from the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, responding to a distress call from a merchant ship under attack by pirates, chased the pirates to their "mother ship," an Iranian-flagged dhow that had earlier been hijacked.
A heavily-armed counter-piracy team from the Navy destroyer USS Kidd met little resistance when they boarded the dhow where they found 15 armed pirates and the 13 Iranians who were being held hostage. The pirates were taken into custody. The Iranians were set free in their dhow.

The rescue occurred about 175 miles southeast of Muscat, Oman.

This and, from what I know of the Chinese military their primary strength is manpower with a decent dose of nationalism. Their hardware is meh and one-on-one any modern American hardware is >>>>> Chinese hardware. They still use an AK-47 variant as their general issue rifle for crying out loud. I'd take an M4 over that any day.

The AK-47 is probably the best fit for such a large potential army as China can field. You can teach someone how to use and care for it in an hour or two, it requires so little care while continuing to operate its not even funny, and even with basically no care it always goes bang. Plus its cheap as hell and very easy to procure.

Perhaps, and I'm not denying that the AK-47 is a capable platform, but it also suffers from the use of the 7.62x39, which weighs almost twice as much as a 5.56 NATO or 5.45x39 AK-74 round. Basically for the same weight, US forces can carry twice the ammo. That's one of the main reasons we moved away from the .308 M14 in the 60s.

Perhaps, and I'm not denying that the AK-47 is a capable platform, but it also suffers from the use of the 7.62x39, which weighs almost twice as much as a 5.56 NATO or 5.45x39 AK-74 round. Basically for the same weight, US forces can carry twice the ammo. That's one of the main reasons we moved away from the .308 M14 in the 60s.

I completely agree but for an untrained conscript army I think the advantages of the AK-47 far outweigh the disadvantages. That obviously isn't the case for a well trained army.

Could be the item Iran uses to allow themselves to back off without losing face and respect. They can say they are giving to the US what we want because we saved their people...an act of kindness for an act of kindness.

Anyway they are talking about not only opening up U.S. Oil reserves but other country oil reserves as well because of the Iran Strait crisis.

But there is no shortage of oil anywhere.

Prices are high strictly because of greed.
