IR communications standard

I am researching IR communications for Palms and CE devices to laptops and desktops. I have been told there are multiple standards.

I know about IrDA and the IrCOMM that it uses to emulate a serial connection to the PC. However, is this the only standard and if so are there multiple versions?

Any help?
