Me again :D

I'm still trying to set up my network to share files, applications and a cable modem.

Which protocols should I install?

Right now it's a mess, I've got all three going with NetBEUI checked as preferred, but it'll crash when playing files from one computer on another, it won't share internet or play LAN games... A nightmare.

Sharing setting in Win98!!!

You will not see a Computer in the Network Neighborhood, unless it shares something.

All computers can have the following Network Protocols:

1. TCP/IP - must be installed for Internet
2. NetBEUI ? simple, no IP scheme, Internet safe (recommended as Default Protocol).
3. IPX/PX ? needed for some LAN games.

The three can reside together BUT - All computers must have the same Default Protocol..

All used Protocols are bound to the Ethernet Card.

All computers have the same Workgroup name.

Each computer has it own unique name.

Make sure that you Logon as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing:

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. The Protocol that you are using for sharing, has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked in the protocol's properties menu.

2. The general File and Print Sharing has to be installed, and checked.

The third in "My Computer" folder.

3. Individual Drive or/and printer has to be checked for sharing.
Right click on the device to share, choose properties, click on the sharing Tab, check Shared As[b/], and give it a name.

I can see and share the hard drives etc no problem -- all the sharing is set up. When I transfer a file from one computer to another, the computer on which the file resides freezes. I've got the latest Win98 update and the latest drivers.

One more thing, the computer with internet access has three adapters showing up under 'network properties': D-Link card used for cable access, Linksys card used for network and a Dial Up Adapter.

Right now every single one of those has three protocols... ipx, netbeui and tcp/ip. Since only the Linksys card needs all three (or so I gather) should I take out the other protocols from the cable access card and the dial up adapter?

MS Network is not the cleanest system in the world, the more you play the more trouble accumulates.

From what I saw, you don?t use a Cable/DSL Router. In the last few month I saw a lot of posts of people who try to clink to there Hub/Switch, and use double card software NAT solutions, which is very vulnerable and cause at times troubles. While maybe justified few months ago, it became moot. You can get a deal on 4 Ports Cable/DSL Router for less then $50.

My suggestion decide on the final make up of your Network, uninstall the whole thing, and reinstall with all the correct drivers.
