IPX over TCP/IP?

Me and a buddy are trying to play an old IPX net game of Duke 3d and we've got a network of two PC's wired into a Lynksys router. Any way to make an IPX connection between the two systems?

If it's an IP net game, doesn't it use IP?

I am sure someone can think of a way to encapsulate IPX in an IP header, since I can't think of one, but alternately you can use a hub/switch or a crossover cable -- then you can natively run any protocol you want.

Geno,

So you can't use IP?

Its gonna get tricky then. You'll have to find some way to tunnel IPX within IP. You can do this with a GRE (generic routing encapsulation) tunnel. Problem is I'm used to doing this from a network layer and not from a host perspective.

It can be done, but there definately isn't an easy answer.

Maybe I am just misunderstanding here. Are you both on the same LAN, attached to the same router? If so, just install IPX/SPX on both machines and have at it. If your at your respective houses then it does get tricky as SPidey has already mentioned

doh!

if you guys are both plugging into the same router/switch then load the IPX protocol and you're all set.

-edit- thanks for pointing out the obvious for me ktwebb.

Both machines have WinXP - so I could just install IPX on both machines and it'll work fine through the router? I used to use IPX through windows, but it was with two systems connected via a coax cable, I didn't know if a router/hub would make any difference. Thanks though! You guys just jogged my memory, because I remember having to install IPX to get the games to work back when I had my own network  Easier than I thought, eh?

ok I'm resurrecting this one - I still can't get Duke3D to recognize any sort of IPX drivers, as soon as it tries to listen for a network game, it dies out with no message.... hmm anything else I have to do here besides enabling IPX on the adapter? Using a Linksys router /w two WinXP machines...

No it does not, Duke3D is of the Doom II/Heretic era of network gaming. Only 4 max players, couldn't join a server in progress, etc., etc.. That was back in the good old days when gaming on the 'net had to be done using services like Kali, and such. :D

At any rate, if it doesn't work, I'd chalk it up to a Windows XP failure to be identical to DOS. It will run in Win98SE, so my bet is its a WinXP incompatibility issue.

And Spidey, way to overcomplicate things. :p
