I am looking to upgrade from my current monitor, an Asus 24" 1080p 60hz to a 27" 144hz or higher gsync monitor. I am running an 8700k and 1080ti and play games like BF1, Destiny 2.

I have done alot of reading about IPS vs TN and the more I read, the harder it gets to make a decision. Some people say the TN panel is better for gaming because of the 1ms response time vs 4ms on an IPS panel but others say the human eye can not tell a difference between that.

Also people say that with IPS panels, BLB or backlight bleed can be a real issue. They also say quality control isn't that great so there is a good chance you can get one that has bad issues.

Another thing is IPS supposedly has better colors than the TN panels. Now I have watched some videos comparing IPS and TN and to me, the TN looked better than the IPS.

Now I know the TN has bad viewing angles but I don't get why this would be an issue. For some yes, but most I would think are sitting right in front of the monitor looking straight at it.

I know IPS would be better for photo editing, where you need better colors. At the moment, I don't do anything like that but who knows what the future holds. When I buy something I tend to keep it for many years so don't want to buy something now and regret it a year or 2 later.

Also seen people say when sitting side by side, they can't tell a difference. In fact some said the TN panel looks better.

Here is a couple I am looking at.

If I go with a TN panel, I was kind of leaning towards the Dell S2716DG, amazon currently has that for $460.

There is a difference between objectively accurate colors, and subjective opinion on how those colors appear to you.

You can prefer the way a TN panel looks while knowing that objectively, it has worse color accuracy than an IPS panel.

If you're not doing work that requires color accuracy, or you're not already used to such monitors, a TN panel is likely going to be fine for you. The people who do notice are people who have been using IPS panels for many years, and people who do work that requires a degree of accuracy in colors.

The Dell panels generally get favorable reviews and their warranty is decent compared to others.

You watched some videos on your current monitor, of the colors of others monitors? That is more than a little flawed.

For response time: Unless you are seriously competitive twitch gamer looking for 200Hz+ panel, response time really isn't that much of an issue. Look at some actual reviews. In 120Hz-144Hz ranges IPS and TN can trade blows. It is down to the individual panel.

Now I know the TN has bad viewing angles but I don't get why this would be an issue. For some yes, but most I would think are sitting right in front of the monitor looking straight at it.

The effect of TN can even be obvious sitting directly in front of it because TN viewing angles are so bad. If you you have a medium shade background covering the screen on TN, it will look like gradient. Dark at the top of the screen, pale at the bottom, only correct at the center of the screen. Some people seem oblivious to this, but I am not. IMO TN is garbage. Plus I tend to move a lot. Sitting upright, slouching down, etc... These have noticeable effect with TN image, none on IPS.

I would (Did) pay extra for IPS. IPS has by FAR, the most stable viewing angles, and if you aren't oblivious, it matters even sitting directly in front of the screen. Effect of viewing angle on multiple colors:

IPS no contest, i do alot of photo work and there is no comparison in accurate color reproduction, its literally like night and day. I still have a TN display for my second screen and every once and a while i drag my images over to it while working on them and laugh at how differnt they look compared to my calibrated IPS panel. If you want whats displayed on your screen to look like what the content creator wanted it to look like then IPS all the way.

I do hate backlight bleed but I find it to be a matter of compromises. I rarely look at blacks in a poorly lit room. There is also ghosting issues, lower response times and so on to consider. In total, I still find IPS to be an acceptable compromise though I'd love to see something closer to OLED in the future.

I was a skeptic about the entire 1ms 144hz monitor vs 60hz thing too till i scored a deal on a used 24'' ACER.1MS 144hz It's hard to explain but if your game can do 144fps its a entirely new kind of smooth.Even if you only get like 100fps its way smoother then sitting in front of a 60hz.

Luckily my panel has nice viewing angles for tn but my monitor like 5 feet away from my bed and i could just lay in the bed and watch whatever and its level with my bed. :) Need to hook up a Roku and some good external speakers then i could be really enjoy this set up. :)
