IPS or 120Hz?

If you were going to upgrade an entry-level TN panel for gaming and general usage, which would you rather spend extra for?

I see some people swearing by IPS and hating on TN, and I see others insisting on 120Hz -- which matters more?

there is no entry level TN. You cough up a bag full of dough for a TN or you dont get it as the entry level TN sucks youll be swearing at the screen and the green all over it more than anything else. 120mhz will determine how many fps your lcd can spit out. That will be 120fps

If you want less motion blur and higher potential FPS (vertical sync), go with a 120Hz display.

Personally, I prefer better colors and more input options, so I went with an IPS panel. The NEC EA231WMi is surprisingly cheap and fairly good when it comes to color accuracy. It also has great viewing angles, a built-in 4-port USB hub, VGA / DVI / DisplayPort, and a great stand. A lot of those things will be left off the list if you go with any TN panel.

What's really frustrating is not being able to see the displays in action to compare them. Any of the stores in my area that I've checked only put out the standard-issue TNs on display. Would be nice to compare an IPS for viewing angles, or just be able to look at a 120Hz display with one's own eyes, as opposed to just rolling the dice with whatever one can find out online.

Personally, I don't know any gamer that sits > 170 or 160* to their monitor... that would be friggin silly

If your games are fast paced, do you really have time to stop and look at the colors? Me?, yeah right. Might as well stop and smell the roses while i'm at it, ppffffffffffffff

no problem, that monitor doesn't come with 3d glasses if you were interested in that

That would be interesting to try, but I wonder if I'd end up getting headaches. o_O Newegg dropped the price on it $50, though, which is what piqued my interest.

another trick you can add to your gaming is a 500Hz or > polling rated mouse...

I've got a Razer DeathAdder currently set to 500 (it does this, 125 and 1000)...

xbitlabs.com reviews are pretty detailed.

I'll take a look here; thanks much for the tip...

It really is a trade off. They are around the same price. 120Hz means clearer visuals (while moving), while IPS means more accurate colors. A 120Hz monitor won't do you any good however if your GPU is crap (or close to crap). It won't make your card render any faster, so if you had a card doing 20fps, it's still going to look choppy. Colors, however, are colors :)

I'd say it really comes down to personal preference and what you'll be doing. For fast-paced gaming, 120Hz is the clear choice. For myself, I cannot stand the crappy washed out colors and low contrast of a typical TN display, so IPS only for me!
