Ipod's

Forgive me if this is not the proper forum.

While I'm awaiting my wife's new Voodoo M:355, the college kid is hitting me up for an i-pod to load all her music on.

Can anyone recommend the optimum way to go here? I am at a complete loss.

My idea of music is Rhapsody with a playlist filled with Jimi Hendrix, Lynnrd Skynrrd, Sting, etc. that I crank up while riding my exercise bike.

Not sure what your question is.

If you're asking if the iPod is any good, the answer is yes, and if s/he is in college, there is an educational discount. A 20 GB iPod will suffice.

she have a mac or pc? If pc... does she have firewire? if not you'll need a firewire card, or you'll need to buy the USB 2.0 cable as well (apple really should have just included this... big mistake i think)

all in all.. .. i love my ipod hope she enjoys it

USB 2.0 is not as good as getting a PCI Firewire card when you're running an iPod (assuming you're running a desktop, not a laptop), because you can charge the Firewire off Firewire. Because of this, I've only once ever used the AC adapter. I always just charge off Firewire.

This is something you may want to consider. Dell has the "Dell Jukebox" 15GB mp3 player clicky here for $249 which is very comparable if not better than the ipod

Quick summary of the Dell from what I've read.

1) Cheaper
2) OS and hardware UI not as nice as the iPod
3) Longer battery life
4) Supports WMA but not compatible with iTunes. (Comes with Music Match - bleah!)
5) No calendar functionality.
6) Not as solidly built as the iPod.

Overall the iPod still gets rated better (mostly because of the UI), but it depends on your preferences of course.

She's running an 8K Inspiron laptop right now.

SHE wants an ipod for whatever reason but I have seen the Dell machine, as well.

Firewire? Huh? USB I know.

Which Inspiron specifically? I know some 8x00 series Inspirons already have Firewire, but I'm not sure if all of them do.

The thing about the Dell Inspirons though is they support only 4-pin Firewire. That will work with the iPod for data transfers if you get the right cable ($10), but unfortunately 4-pin Firewire doesn't support charging since 4-pin Firewire doesn't carry power.

6-pin Firewire supports charging, but the laptops with 6-pin Firewire are less common. Only the Macs and rare Windows laptops (like Gateway, etc.) have it, whereas pretty much all desktop Firewire cards (Windows or Mac) support 6-pin with power. Windows laptop designers really should get with the program. :frown:

I'm actually thinking about getting the Iriver IGP-150 mostly because 1.5GB is plenty enough for me but it also comes with a built-in FM tuner, unfortunately I'm limited by having best buy gift cards so I can't really get the dell jukebox or ipod (at least I don't know that bestbuy carries the ipod)

Well that answers your question. The Dell Inspiron 8000 does NOT support USB 2.0. It has 4-pin Firewire however. ie. Get her the iPod.

If you're in love with an ipod, then go that route. If you're willing to look at alternatives, there's plenty of them out there. From what i've read the dell is probably #3/4 on the list- Rio Karma and iRiver ihp-100 (?) are the 2 most highly rated non-ipod's.

If you're looking at the 1.5gb mp3 players, that's fine too. If that's the case though you should stick with the Rio Nitrus, which has the edge on the rest in useability, weight, and size. the iRiver 1.5gb player weighs in at > 5 oz... for that much weight, you may as well move on up to the big boys (10gb + players). The nitrus is a svelte 2.x oz. (in comparison, the nomad muvo2 is also > 5oz, and i don't know about the rio lyra but i've read it's got very poor useability)

For people not buying their players for a while, 4gb players should be replacing the current 1.5gb players next season, assuming the rumours of 4gb 1 inch drives comes true.

Brothers Casey and Van Neistat, who collaborate on video projects using Mac editing software, said they were told by a technical support representative at Apple Computer that the cost to replace the dead battery in an 18-month-old iPod would be $255--comparable to the cost of a new device.

A couple of days ago Steve gave you a heads up to a link with a fairly funny movie that pointed out that once your iPod batteries wear out, Apple would charge you $250 for a new one. Yeeouch, and what a rip off. It seems as though after taking some heat, Apple has backed off and brought the price down to $99. Not exactly a bargin, but not exactly bending you over in public like before either. I would surely take this into consideration before buying an iPod.

Don't put so much faith in everything you see on the internet.

This stuff has been throughly<sp?> posted and beaten to death. Do a search for ipodsdirtylittlesecret or something like that. You can get a new batt for $99 from Apple, pay $59 for Applecare for your iPod, or purcahse a 3rd party battery for $50. And, AFAIK, an iPod batt dieing in 18 months or less is far from the norm. And, last but not least, these brothers had an obvious axe to grind Link. The brothers later agreed to add the requested links and info Link.
