iPods don't freeze too much...right??

Okay probably wrong forum I know but I checked Gadgets and there were like 10 threads...anyway I bought a Sansa View 16 GB, this may have been a mistake because the device seems incapable of playing songs on Play All (about 1800 songs) without freezing pretty frequently. I'm assuming a Nano would be able to handle this task? Perhaps I cannot avoid an Apple product any longer...

Also how do you guys like those vent clip holders for the car? Do they block airflow much?

The nano is the answer to all of your problems. Stop buying non apple branded products and you wont have to deal with shitty music players.
 
All of my Sansas(all 2gb or less) have worked flawlessly. My daughter has a Zune I like a lot also. I don't do Apple. It'll be a cold day in hell before I own an i anything, or run OSX.

Somehow coldmeat's post is showing before mine....

I too would prefer to avoid Apple anything, that's why I bought the Sansa, but it just can't handle the Play All playlist. It can handle the genre playlists just fine, but I often don't want to do that. What other good players are there? I only need 16 GB so I want flash-based.
 
Is the Sansa's firmware upgradable? Maybe try upgrading to the latest version and see if that helps, but more than likely it's just defective.

As far as iPods go, they are good music players IMO. They are kind of expensive, though, and don't have features that some people would like (FM radio, for example). But otherwise I like them, I'm kind of a fan of the clickwheel interface. Also there are numerous alternatives to iTunes if you'd rather not use that to sync.

edit: Hmm, weird that it's only the play all playlist that has problems, maybe the player doesn't have enough memory or CPU power to handle large playlists? Like I said maybe try updating to the latest official firmware or another member suggested 3rd party firmware. If that doesn't fix the problem sounds like it's time to look for a different MP3 player.

If you don't want to buy Apple, have a look at Sony and Samsung players. I currently use a Sony Walkman NWZ-A728 and I love it. My previous player was a Samsung YP-T9B and it was great too, only replaced it because I wanted more capacity.
 
My iPod started freezing like crazy. It started out freezing every few days, nothing a good hard reboot couldn't fix. Over a period of 6 months it got worse and worse. Then it stopped booting at all.

The harddrive went bad, thats all.
 
frostedflakes, yep I got the latest firmware. Doesn't seem like they're gonna update it anymore unfortunately. I definitely think it's a problem of either inadequate hardware or horrible software indexing/sorting techniques. I can't wait around for Rockbox, it might not ever happen.

I could be fine with an iPod if I could use Winamp to sync, but ahhh I still have that Apple aversion, and yeah it ain't cheap like $175. I couldn't find any 16 GB Sony or Samsung players. The question is, will even an iPod be able to handle an 1800-song playlist perfectly? I have a feeling most people don't do this.
 
Why does the size have to be so big? You can fit a crap load of music in 2-4gb, and refresh it every so often when you charge it on the computer.

If you do end up looking at iPods, you might check out Apple refurbs. I've purchased a few and they were all in like-new condition, it's really a pretty good deal. Looks like their store is currently down for maintenance, but last time I checked I think they had the 4th gen 16GB Nanos for $150 (+ tax and shipping).

As far as being able to handle the 1800+ song playlist, unfortunately I don't know. My 2nd gen Nano does fine with play all and random play all, but I only have like 500 songs on it. I'd think it would be able to handle 1800 songs, but then again I would've thought the Sansa would have been able to as well, so who knows.

edit: Hmm, looks like $150 isn't much cheaper than buying new, though.

My iPod has frozen frozen (Hard freeze, no audio and no response to input) once, it came close a couple of other times. I have had it for about 2 years now I guess.

It has approximately 4000 songs on it, and I think the freezing was more relatedly to all the jumping around I was doing, than the playlist length. Your average MP3 player should be able to handle it just fine.
 
I'm not sure if this is typical for a Sansa View or not. Mine could be defective, so I could try warranty replacement, but I almost don't feel like it and kind of suspect the same issue with another one. I'm just curious if there are other good, 16 GB flash MP3 players out there. If the Nano is the only really solid option, that's surprising.
 
I've had over 3000 mp3, aac, and Apple Lossless songs loaded and have used the random playlist flawless on my 3rd gen(I think that's the generation) iPod. I'm sure they've gotten much better since then.

I returned my Sansa View after trying three copies. All locked up within minutes of playing. Ended up getting a Creative Zen. Glad I did, the Zen rocks.

Thanks. That's enough confirmation for me. I will either wait until I get a Palm Pre (hopefully) with Sprint soon and try to use that, or probably just get an iPod. I'm tempted by the Touch since it seems it'd be easier to use in the car when properly mounted, but it's a bit pricey.
