IPod: Which size?

Which version would you get? 5GB, 10GB or 20GB? (remember, I'm from Switzerland)

Prices for:
20GB - 560$
10GB - 500$
5GB - 400$

I think I would take the 5GB version cuz when do I really need 20GB? I currently have a Nex II with 256MB and there go about 3 full albums in CD-quality (using 192kbit VBR) and that's just a tad too little.
 
It depends on how large your record collection is, IMO. Until I had an iPod (I have a 10GB unit), I too felt like 5 GB would be plenty, but that was because I had never used the device, and underestimated how handy it is to have access to most of my record collection all at once. I bought my 10 GB unit for $300 (it was a closeout of the first-gen Mac iPods; I reflashed it to operate under Windows), but if I had not I would have bought a 10 GB one. The 10 GB iPod also has the advantage of coming with a remote control and case, which are not included with the 5 GB one (I do not have a remote, but would not mind having one).
 
It depends. I'm perfectly happy with my 5GB model. I have 490 songs on it, most recorded at a very high quality, and I still have 1.8 GB free. Plus, there's a good 20 songs on there I don't even want, but I just recorded the full CD and transferred it. So there is some space I can clear. Yea the 10 or 20 GB would be nice, but the price was just to high for me.

Nah, I want something nice small and handy like the iPod, maybe I would consider the Creative Zen thingie.
 
i bought an archos 5000 jukebox player for 129 from outpost.com (supposedly 99 at frys). you can upgrade it to i believe a 20gb and still come in under the cost of an ipod. there's a great open source firmware at rockbox.haxx.se, and you can order a remote from archos for 20 bucks (wired).

129 + 100 + 20 is 249, compared to 560 for an ipod. as before, it's not firewire, but it's fast enough for me. i've got ~800 songs on the 5gb drive now, and i still have a gb free.

i just got a refurb 5 gig iPod from apple for $199.00 So far I have it about half filled with music. I think it's the greatest mp3 I have ever seen. I think if I had a 10 or 20 gig unit I would have so much music that I wouln't even listen to half of it becuase I wouldn't know that I even had it. I am always "cleaning" out my mp3 folder, so my collection is rerely over 3 gigs.
 
get the 10 gig

10 gig costs 100 dollars more than teh 5 gig..... for the 5 gig if you add in the price of a remote, case and firewire cover, you'd be approaching 399 the price of a 10 gig...so why not just pay the amount for a 10 gig and get all those things plus 5 more gigs of storage? although i admit the case that comes with the 10 gig is crappy...the gray bag is nice though

the 20 gig could be useful but to be honest, the battery doesn't last any longer than the 10 gig to enjoy twice as much storage capacity

EDIT: oops, i didn't notice the prices for switzerland...if it's only 60 dollars more for the 20 gig, i'd get that
 
Longtime lurker, first time poster- wanted to put in my 2 cents- I would get the 5 gig. I thought the 10 gig was perfect until I read that you can't jog with it (the HD will shut itself down occassionally). The problems occure in the 10 and 20 gig pods, at least that's what I've been reading on the ipod messageboards (ipodlounge). If you don't plan on jogging or working out with it, I think you should get the 20 (b/c of the prices you have)
 
My 2 cents, get the 20 (I can't wait until a 40 or 80 comes out!). To me a big function of the unit is to act as a backup for my music library as much as a player, this way if I ever lose the raid array the music is on (this happened to me once) I can recover the music from the iPod with a little work.

at least the 10 gig (since in addition to the space it has the other extras) but its almost stupid not to go for the 20 with that pricing structure
 
20GB, the price isnt that much more than the smaller versions and 20GB would be enough to fit my entire MP3 collection.

I have the 10GB. Totally awesome. Anyone who recommends you consider something else either hates Apple or have never acutally used the iPod. It rocks. The best MP3 player I have owned, hands-down.

So to answer your questions, I don't know. 😀 I went with the 10GB because the 20GB was too thick to fit into the case I wanted. The 5GB does not include the wired remote or case, plus it uses a moving wheel as opposed to the new touch pad.
 
not that I would really care anyways, I'm usually at home or in my office where I have large collections of music. And if I need more portability I just throw them on my laptop...

id say 5gig unless you listen to a TOn of music. if you do get the 10gig. 20 is just nuts i dont even have 20 gigs of mp3s total
 
I can't see how it matters how many MP3s you currently have, since you will want to encode your record collection as well, to transfer it to the iPod.
