iPod Touch owners - Will you be purchasing firmware 3.0?

I probably will. I don't buy apps, really, but I will spend $10 on the OS upgrade.

The landscape mode in more of the core apps is really enough for me. The other stuff might be neat too.

I probably will, but I haven't decided when. As sjwaste said, the landscape mode would be the big thing for me.

You have to PAY for a firmware upgrade?

Ugh.. yes you do. It's stupid. It's the way Apple accounts for iPod Touch sales. Again, it's stupid. Why isn't it $1? I don't know. It's just something that you either have to do, or don't have to do.

Uh, isn't Push just for cellular (i.e. iPhone) users?

I don't think so... skype should notify you via push if there is a call coming in and that works over wifi... email etc. It's not just for MMS.

On further reflection, that's impossible. WiFi isn't an always-on connection. You can't push to it if the iPod isn't fully awake. So Skype may be able to notify you if the iPod is awake, but it's going to be of limited use. Your iPod would quickly run out of juice if it was awake all the time.

So it'll work, just not great...

Lulwut?

Really? You actually BELIEVE that?

Wow, where can I find customers like you? You overpaid for a gadget that lacks basic functionality that you'd find in any other "smart phone" and now you are willing to pay $10 to fix it. That is just too funny. Apple has really whittled the art of selling vaporware down to a fine science.

No, I don't own an iPod Touch. I'm saying it's something that Apple isn't changing, so you either have to put up with it, or don't. They've stated that's how they account for their iPodTouch market. Why don't they lump them into the iPhone accounting books? I don't know. I think it's a bit ridiculous.

BUT... you also have to look at it another way. You bought your iPodTouch (if you bought one) knowing that it functions the way that it does. You should be happy with that. Apple never promised to give away the software that runs on that device for free. You could think of it like versions of OS X, but for the iPodTouch. You got 2.0 with your iPodTouch, but you have to pay $10 next year for 3.0/4.0/etc...

Anyway, whatever...

the touch is not a phone. The update is free on the phone.

When has Microsoft or palm ever released an updated OS for free? Or for that matter, an updated OS that even ran on the older hardware?

You see, a Windows CE device makes the distinction that it is a device running a third party OS, which is an independent product. The iPhone/Touch are both marketed as self-contained products which have their own custom OS.

Maybe I could see sense in that if they were running "Mac OS Mobile" or something to that effect, but they are never presented like that. For that reason, the firmware update should be considered customer support and be included free.

I use a Blackberry and I recently updated to the newest RIM OS...for free, straight from RIM's website. If I was in the situation of an Touch owner who was faced with $10 charge for UPDATING the firmware, you can bet I'd be getting that shit from TBP for free.

I don't have a touch but I think (read this) you can download the IPS file and then hold down ALT when clicking the upgrade button to load a new firmware.

Mac OS Mobile is enough, but iPhone OS 3.0 isn't enough of a distinction for you?

Again, you have a phone. The update is free for iPhone users.

I'd like to know if/when the iPod touch hardware is going to be updated to the same processor graphics as the iPhone 3GS....

Yes, because besides the iPhone and iPod touch, there are many other devices using the iphone os. In fact, apple licenses the iphone OS to third parties...oh...wait...they don't.

The touch is essentially an iphone, minus the phone. It hardly warrants there being a charge for the firmware. It's also funny that you are gonna sit there and side with Apple instead...it's like you WANT it to cost money.

the iPhone update is free. $10 only applies to the Touch, which isn't a smart phone at all. It lacks basic functionality? Funny, I own one and it does 100x more than any other PMP I've ever used. get back to me with a list of even a single PMP that does more than the Touch.

I was just VNC'ing into a clients PC with my Touch, not a phone, a mp3 player! lacks basics ha ha ha good one.

I'll be purchasing the update, simply because I have made a ton of money thanks to my Touch. I use it to connect to clients computers all the time. If I didn't have a touch I'd have to home to use my PC (when I'm out) or worse drive back to the office to fix a small issue. I can't think of another PMP I could have bought that would assist me in making money. The gas I've saved alone being able to use it for VNC and not having to drive home or 25 miles back to an office. My Touch has paid for itself probably 5 times over. a $10 upgrade is nothing to me for how damn useful this device is to me. Would I like the update to be free? Of course, maybe it should be. Windows 7 should be free if you own Vista. Big companies don't give shit away it's not good for business.
