Just to throw in my $.02...

Just got a 1 GB Shuffle today, and am listening to it now. In my opinion--as someone who wants some music while sitting in airports (often) and for going to the gym (less often)--it's wonderful.

Granted, I didn't want a 20 GB HDD--I was too afraid of damage to the hard disk with heavy traveling. Didn't want the weight either. Also, my entire music collection is only 7 or 8 GB, and I feel that a 1 GB sample is plenty. I also don't care about being able to use an equalizer, or have a voice recorder, or any of the superfluous stuff that others on this board seem to want to do with their larger ipods (just my opinion; you're certainly welcome to have yours; that's why there's vanilla and chocolate).

The sound is as good as I could want (be warned, I'm no audiophile; but others who are seem satisfied--at least if they're willing to stoop to the level of MP3s). Anyway for my needs, it's exactly what I need, and the styling is nice too. Would be nice if I could sync it between my home and work PC, but I'll get over it.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you have any other questions.

Oh, and for the lack of the LCD? , I grant you, it would be nice if they had included one. (lots of my music is classical/jazz/modern music so it's a little bit more complicated than figuring out which Britney Spears song is playing :)). But then again, I can deal with it--I'd rather listen to the music than try to pull up all sorts of stuff on a screen. Again, that's how I use/plan to use it. For others, that could be a major drawback. You just have to figure out what you'd need.

There is a forward and back button on the thing. That gives you...drumroll...control!

ya control to the next random song...and if you're in the mood for one particular song you just shuffle through all of them?

No

In "regular mode", it plays the exact same way it is on your playlist on your computer (alphabetical order, same artist together, etc)

shuffling it makes it play in random order, ie, song #1, then song # 19, then song #85

in regular mode, it goes, 1,2,3,4,5,6,etc

Maybe I should rephrase.

This is where I get lost. Why "deal with it"? Why not buy one that DOES include it, especially when they also cost less?

Seriously, I've learned that LCD is pretty useless when you're playing your songs in shuffle mode.

Are you justifying the money you just wasted on a iPod shuffle?

No, I just got the new 30 GB iPod Photo, so I guess that I'm justifying the money that I spent on that :)

Seriously, though, I usually only use the screen when I'm browsing photos or playing that nifty little "guess the song" game. When it's in shuffle mode, I just use the back and forward buttons and the volume control slider.

Sorry--by "deal with it" I mean that I mostly listen to it while it's in my bag, and I wouldn't bother taking it out to look at it. So the 1 time out of 100 when I'm motivated enough to do it (and in a place where I can) doesn't matter much.

And as for why pay more? I'd argue that it's close enough in capacity to the other players we've been talking about not to be exhorbanant--and, I'm a little bit unusual in that I really like simplicity on gadgets. Mostly, though, I would actually get irked by all of the additions (obviously, some people would not). I figure I'd make this purchase nice and simple. But clearly, there are people who would rather have the extra features. Chocolate and Vanilla again, I guess.

My biggest problem with a iPod shuffle is that you would have to pre-load the songs, and ONLY the songs, you want to listen to for each session. If you want a different "playlist" you have to delete the files on your iPod Shuffle, then load a different playlist on it! With a LCD screen, you could at least load different playlists so that is one upload session you could have ~512 minutes of music spread out over different playlists (i.e - hardcore work out playlist, running playlist, and the cool down on the way home playlist). With a LCD-less mp3 player your stuck with what you loaded and beholden to those songs.

You're sacrificing flexibility and useability.

I would spend you money on an solid-state memory mp3 player that atleast gives you the flexibility and freedom to carry multiple playlists for your multiple activities...

FROM A REVIEW FROM A PC MAGAZINE: NOT MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION:
Build Quality: 2/10 (ie: pretty crap)
Features: 1/10 (ie: none)
Value for money: 4/10 (ie: not much)

Issues:
No proper hold button.
Can only recharge from a PC (AC adapter extra, bumping up the price)
Need iTunes
No display
No volume indicator
Restrictive interface.

Verdict: There are BETTER players, the shuffle is a half way house for those who must have iTunes but are too poor for an iPod. It's restrictive interface could wear you down, and the lack of display is a big minus.

the point of autofill is that u just use it like a jukebox. assuming u don't own a whole assload of music u hate u know. with 512/1gb and short listening period(assumed workout device etc)..u got a decent selection no matter what.

making playlists for limited space flash players is just a pain for many people. its not their purpose, atleast its not something they are good at because of the space issue. flexibility is kinda pointless when you only have 512mb..which is inherently inflexible. thats the point.. its a waste of time.

thats what the hd players are for...all your music. the flash players aren't supposed to replace the normal ipods..

only gripes i can think of are for people that are too poor to buy an ipod and think the flash players should be a cheap alternative:p

You iFanbois are as irrational as any woman shopper I've ever met!
  • iShuffle, SanDisk, MuVo TX FM

    Height: 3.3", 2.96", 2.9"
    Width: .98", 1.28", 1.4"
    Depth: .33", .82", .6"
    Weight: .78 oz, 1.02 oz, 1.13 oz
    Warranty: 1 yr, 1 yr, 1 yr
Price: $99.95, $94.69, $111.99 (or $97.90 AR) (prices include shipping)
To literally shave fractions of an inch, and at most .35 oz, you conclude it's preferable to:
  • Pay more
  • Forgo a navigation LCD
  • Saddle yourself with proprietary software
  • Forgo battery life
  • Forgo FM...
I take that back. Most women are better shoppers!

I haven't purchased yet and have read through the posts.

The two players I have in the running are iPod Shuffle 512 and SanDisk 512. The biggest features that I live about the iPod Shuffle is simplicity, autofill and rechargeble USB port. If the battery only lasts one year, big deal. in one year I will be ready to buy a 4GB flash player.

The only option that I wish the iPod Shuffle had was an FM Tuner. This would make the player much more versitle in my opinion. But I am really lazy, and the autofill, recharge features of the iPod probably have me sold.

The LCD screen is useless in my opinion, especially if you are working out, because with the LCD screen everytime you skip a song you have to wait for the text to load and that can get annoying when skipping through songs.

My two cents. Make me an iPod Shuffle with an FM Tuner and I would be in heaven. No LCD Screen required, just a scan button to skip between radio stations.
