I am currently looking into the 512 MB iPod shuffle. Anyone have one that can tell me anything about them? (Are they good? Any problems with them? etc.)

Thanks in advance.

get a mini instead! (all part of steve job's evil plan... you go in there wanting a shuffle, and then you think... for just $50 more i can get 4x the storage and a screen!)

For what I use a shuffle for, it's the best I've found. I mainly use it to listen to music while biking to class and working out at the gym. Both of these activities require something small and lightweight with a small, but reasonable, amount of storage. You will not believe how light the shuffle is until you've actually used it. I forget it's in my pocket half the time. A mini would be nice if you do other things, but I don't use a screen, the extra storage wouldn't be used, and extra size and weight would make throwing it in my pocket and forgetting about it much harder to do.

But that's just me, my brother has a regular iPod and for what HE uses it for, a shuffle wouldn't be that great. A lot of people knock the shuffle for not having this feature or that feature, but what they're really showing is that it all depends on what you use it for.

Yeah, but unless you go on road trips every weekend, who really needs more than 512mb worth of music on their person? :p

I'd plan on using it just for working out mainly. Just something better to use than a cd player for when im jogging.

Dumb Question: Can you just drag your own mp3's to it, or do you have to go through iTunes where you browse then buy what you want? I don't want to have to repay for songs I already have on my computer.

iPod Shuffle 512MB = $99
iPod Shuffle 1GB = $149
iPod Mini 4GB = $199
iPod Mini 6GB = $249

There's no prob w/ the shuffle, just the lack of display telling you what the hell's currently playing. The new iPod Minis also have longer battery life, 18 hrs. according to spec sheet, shuffle only has 12 hrs.

Yes, you can use your own MP3s. But it'll have to be transfered to the iPod using iTunes. The iTunes you're thinking about is the iTunes Music Store where you can buy inferior quality 128 AAC tracks for $99 each track and $9.99 for each album.

Alright thanks. That was one of my biggest concerns since I have all my CD's and stuff I want already on here.

doesn't anybody care about the lack of control over what songs you want to listen to?

BTW, if you're gonna use iTunes w/ your MP3s, make sure you turn off "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder when Adding to Library" in the Advanced tab of Preference. Do it before you drag your MP3s collection into iTunes, or else you'll fvck up everything. EVERYTHING.

Who cares? It looks cool, everybody carrying one looks cool, the billboard ads say you're cool, and most importantly, Steve says it's cool.

What do you mean by lack of control? As far as I understand, you can tell it what songs you put on there, and even in what order you want them to play. It also has a forward/back button on it to let you go back & forth between songs. You don't necessarily have to load random songs and have them play in a random order, though that is one of the features of the shuffle.

There's only two reasons I can see to buy a Shuffle:

1) You also need a USB key and don't want to carry two devices around.
2) You're worried that working out with the Mini will damage the hard drive.

Other than that...there's nothing standout about it over other players.

I'm surprised to find now that the iPod mine 6GB is the better value over the Zen Micro's 5 GB player after the price drop.

yea its point is a grab and go player for regular active use. autofill with random songs makes it mindless. its not supposed to replace the mini or normal ipod.
