Ipod question

I've ignored the iPod craze from the beginning, but I'm now in the market for a larger capacity MP3 player and I'm feeling rather ignorant. I probably only need about 30GB of space for my MP3 collection and I'm wondering if I can use the remaining space on an 80GB iPod as a portable hard drive. Also, could I compress some DVDs and watch them on the Ipod or is there a problem with this. I've heard that you have to use iTunes as an interface for the iPod and some have voiced frustration over this, but I'm not really sure why. Can anyone enlighten me on the iPod or recommend an alternative brand? My budget if fairly limited and the $250 for the new 80GB iPod will be a bit of a stretch, but I'm willing to save-up for it if the notions I mentioned above work out for me.

Thanks in advance.

on the iPods you can allocate a set amount of space to be used for data files. Just load up all of your music then set most of the free space left for data storage :) it can then be used just like an external HDD.

I think for $250 the 80 GB iPod classics are a great deal, i'm debating whether to get a 80 or 160 GB model even though I just bought a 30 GB zune back in February.

I just bought an iPhone a few days ago so I am not that familiar with the process but Handbrake seems to be the tool of choice for processing video for the iPod. http://handbrake.m0k.org/

I recently got my hands on an ipod video 30gb. It is now my 4th ipod. I have a 10gb 3rd gen, a 40gb 4th gen, a 1gb laast ver shuffle and now the 5.5 gen 30gb. I am tempted to sell all 4 and get the 160gb ipod classic. 40 hour battery life is sweet. Alas, 160gb is still not nearly enough for all my mp3s. :)
