Ipod or Iriver?

I am looking into getting an mp3 player for when I go to the gym and for studying (i like studying by recording my notes and listening to them over and over again).

I was considering the Iriver www.iriver.com the 512meg model because it is really tiny and it has an arm strap for the gym etc. It also has a built in mic so I could record my notes right onto it.

Ipod is bigger than it, doesn't have a cool blue scree, no mic, but it has a super huge capacity.

The thing is that they both cost $300 and I am on the fence with which one to get. If the ipod had a mic and if it had a convenient carry method I'd get it in a heartbeat. I think the iriver has more features though.

What do you think?

It sounds like you need the Mic feature... so I guess Iriver is the road to follow.. but if you REALLY need more storage than obviously Ipod is your answer

I don't need more than 17hours of music (which is what I should get with 512megs), but for $300 I think I deserve the extra storage hehe

what's your alternative to recording? have you considered using an MD? for $300, you could get one that has good recording capabilities. you wouldn't be able to transfer back to your computer tho (well, only in real time), if you want to do that.

I am definetly not into MD. I like the added benefit these mp3 players have of being a flash drive.

Get the ipod the value is so much better. The build quality/looks/functionality is top notch it's tiny and light as well as nice looking. It also has much more capacity and is a proven design. I'd be willing to bet that it's build quality is much higher than the Iriver.

All things considered I think the ipod is the best portable mp3 player on the market.

ihp-100

I've heard a couple good reviews (not many people have them yet).
The thing is about $400 but it looks really really good.

well, i would say go for the ipod then if you don't mind no direct recording. i love mine. the ihp100 looks interesting too.. kinda "harsh" looking... in comparison to the ipod anyway :)

I just got the MPIO FL-100 from Amazon for 118. It comes with either 128 or 256 megs plus a SD expansion slot so you can get up to 768 megs in there. Its really tiny, and the voice recording works great. Plus it comes with a hand/neck strap AND a belt clip and its really tiny in addition to having a FM tuner.

Might be a cheaper alternative thanks!

get Minidisc! has long battery life (if you dont use the rechargeable battery), has a microphone and Line/optical in. make sure your model is 707/710 and higher, because the lower models dont have the microphone jack. plus, all of the models are good priced, except for the high-end ones, which are outrageously priced.

I have been looking at this player
30 hours battery life from a single AA is pretty sweet.

iriver has high quality products, i don't see why you would assume the ipod is better quality.

the iriver ihp-100 and i'll tell you why...

much longer battery life
nice lcd remote
doesn't look ghey :p
mp3 recording
about the same in all other aspects compared to the ipod, except it costs a bit more and has less capacity. iriver's products have all had great design so far, both exterior and UI, and there's no reason to think that this one won't either.
