Overall, that kind of drop test is why solid-state players really can't be compared directly to HDD-based ones. A lot of writers don't seem to get that if you want or need a solid-state player, they could make 400GB HDD players, and it still would not be comparable to a 1GB flash player. Most won't survive that kind of abuse, but in actual use, you're never going to stress it like that (~6ft drops, and being stepped on, FI, will be common for mine

). Even the 20mph drop is extreme, really.
A HDD-based player, though, would have permanent damage done to it, possibly resulting in unrecoverable data.
