I think ALL rio's are ugly. But they are box like and they have little to no imagination. The new sony player looks good though. Nothing like the ipod but might pick one up and try it!

Would you like to comment on the sticky feeling in the back of your throat? Oh, I forgot that's why you took it out. Next time we could do without the pics.

I think the main question is:

I could care less about the mini vs carbon debate.

The main question: Can I rip the 5gb hard drive out, use it in my digital camera, and put a cheap card in the carbon for my music?

Why not just buy the HD by itself, and get a flash memory mp3 player?

the hd cost much much more if not purchased in a mp3 player.

Although iPod is new religon for many, some still want alternative.

Here is an official review from PC World, check it out, if you are in market for a mp3 player; no need to totally dismiss Rio Carbon, before you read it.

Ease of Use: Carbon, since you don't have to go through iTunes

This is just brain dead. Rate the "easy of use" based needing to use iTunes? Who cares about iTunes once the songs are on your PLAYER?
And why not just load the iPod plug in for winamp? Problem solved and the iPod series have a UI that can be operated by your grandma without any help.

*note: I do not own any portable player.

I just use EphPod anyway. Streamlined and fast. After you open it, it's about 3 clicks to add a directory full of music. No iTunes here 🙂

i have the ipod and i love it. to tell you the truth, im a work out guru and what i really want would be a player that is not as heavy as the ipod, and something that is capable of harnessing wireless earphones..... man I just hate whacking the wires when im running......!!!!!!!!! I guess there are still more to come on portable mp3 players.

I use a mini and just run the wires under my shirt when I work out.

I went back and did some reasearch; feature-set, battery-life and sound quality wise this is indeed a i-pod mini killer for what i can tell. the only problem is the apple marketing machine is what makes the daps sell, not the quality of the actual product 🙁

carbon 2.5 x 0.6 x 3.3

So The rio is wider and slightly thicker but shorter.

Take look at THIS PICTURE for a SIZE comparison.

ur judging on that? multiply the dimensions for total volume and come back. the normal rio 4gb was larger then the mini, so this one probably is too considering it looks to be of the same design.

mini (W x D x H): 2 in x 0.5 in x 3.6 in =3.6
carbon 2.5 x 0.6 x 3.3 =4.96

🙂

Man i tried that.... it just doesnt feel good. its just me i guess. =)

I don't know if its an ipod killer, but it's on my list of things to check out. The looks are just fine imo. I wish they didnt use red leds and put that big rio tag on it....

I'm currently in the market and will be picking something up this month. I like the 20 hour battery life and the extra gig for $25 less. No playlist kind of sucks. I wonder how durable it will be.

It's a very nice mp3 player, but I doubt it will be an ipod mini killer. Ipods have become kind of like a fashion statement now.

Another review from Gear Live, 9 out 10 rating. If you are in the market, worth a look. By the way, I am not personally for Rio Carbon, or against iPod mini. Only because, my mama told me, you better shop around.

Nitrus:

Depth: 0.6 inches

Carbon:
Width: 2.5 inches
Height: 3.3 inches
Depth: 0.6 inches

I wish there was one with a built in speaker so I could use this at work as we are always on camera.

Any ideas if they have something like that? I don't need 20 gigs.

YAY~!
just received my 4G 20GB iPod today. but i wish i got the mini. bad thing about the mini is that i have way more the 4GBs of music on my computer but the size is so compact. another good thing about the mini is the aluminum case that prevents scratching. i bought my ipod not knowing it was chrome and im a perfectionist so ill probably spend more time cleaning my ipod instead of enjoying it listening to music.

rio is ugly tho, IMO
