maybe you should damn the supposed journalists on the net posting rumours.

Let me officially welcome this threads Apple zealot.

Yeah, Apple could have done much, much better. Sure it looks nice, but it's still out of my price range. Personally, I could fill all 4 GB with ripped CDs, but I don't have the time to rip them all. 100-150 would have been perfect. Apple would have a much higher market share if they lowered the price on them. Silly Jobs, what does he thing he's trying to pull?

dont u think some other company would already if they could? or are they also silly like jobs?

There are plenty of companies with sub $200 MP3 players. As has been mentioned numerous times in this thread, it would have made more sense for Apple to release a lower capacity iPod in $100-150 range, than what they did end up releasing. $250 isn't exactly going to open up the iPod to a whole new target audience.

When you work for Apple you have the luxury of selling anything at an exhorbitant price because their will always be a just large enough group of people (some in this thread in fact) who buy it just because it has an Apple logo on it.

That's a lame argument of course, considering that the iPod has one third of the entire world's MP3 player unit sales.

THe only other company to release a 4 gig small mp3 player is Rio, and it costs the same as the new mini ipod. So while other companies have sub 200 mp3 players, NONE OF THEM use these 4 gig hard drives. I would rather have a mini ipod than a rio nitrus.

People do the same for cars and other things, for good reason sometimes. If you like apple stuff, you can be fairly certain that any random apple thing you buy will be similar to the other apple things you've bought. It's not like apple sells rebadged mp3 players.

And you said they've saturated the high-end mp3 player market; what makes you come to that conclusion?

I'm sure apple knows that $199 would have been the sweep spot but I'm betting that the 4gb hard drive is not the bulk of the cost with this unit. If switching from a 4gb to a 2gb drive would knock off $50 i'm sure they would do it but it prob only costs them like $20 more to get 4gb instead of 2gb. If they dropped it to 1gb than that is way too little space for a $200 mp3 player. I think 2gb/$199 would have been a sweet spot. But either way, this thing is tiny so most people will buy this. Is apple selling it direct with free shipping?

Apple pretty much already owns the $250+ MP3 market. Who else has any signficant market share in that price range? Why release another product that pricewise only competes with yourself?

Weren't the old ipods $299 and up? $50 less I guess. Not a huge difference, but maybe the beginnings of a move toward the cheaper market.

i prefer to think of myself as the voice of reason. i dislike irrational arguements. the apple haters are zealots. i don't even own a mac😛 the simple fact that a large portion of the ipod owners are windows users now should wake you up from your irrational hatred. the simple fact is that if a better product were released by another company, and for cheaper, we'd be running to the stores in droves.

really? and do any of them touch the ipod? no!! 300 dollar 512mb flash players, 1.5gb hd players that cost more then the supposed 99dollar sweet spot and are still larger/uglier/lack ipod features etc etc. all various forms of first attempts at a harddrive player, basic beta products. the fact is if some company beat the ipods pants off in every way, they would be the star of the show, the ipod would be a laughing stock and unable to charge a premium to such a wide audience. thats just reasonable. its still a capitalist system here u know. the other companies aren't in collusion with jobs, holding back ipod killers just to screw you. and at this point its not really a premium as there are no comparable products at lower prices. they all sacrifice something for their price, size, weight, etc.

the simple fact is some people bought into the rumor that they would get something incredible for 99 dollars. and now the reality is that it costs more, while still unmatched, compares unfavorably to a fantasy player. is that rational? or simply falling for media hype based on nothing more then a rumor.

really? so the ipods are only being sold to mac zealots now huh? all those windows users with ipods whom by definition aren't mac zealots..they don't exist. just repeat that to yourself until you think its real. the windows users are buying ipods because they are simply better then the competition.

0roo0roo,

Well said. Ipod sells because its superior to the competition. Great hardware and simple software interface. Until better product comes along, Apple can and will charge a premium.

The Rio one seems to me to be the best deal, itll have the same battery life, the same storage, but since itll be sold like a regular product not an apple shmapple POS overcharged product, itll be less than 250 in some stores.

Rio also has the Rio Karma 20 which is a 20GB mp3 player with 15 hour playback and this size

Karma 20 comes in black on light gray

Dimensions: 2.7? X 3.0? X 1.1?
Weight: 5.5oz
Battery: 15-hour continuous playback on internal Li Ion battery
LCD: 49mm, 160x128, indigo backlight, 16 shade grayscale

i waited to buy an ipod until the the mini came out, now it is between the 15 gb ipod or the Zen. do u guys think student discount will apply to the 15 gb ipod since there already is a pricedrop?

Student discount should still apply. Go with the Ipod. It's simply the best. Itunes makes it simple to use.

Zen=ugly thing

Hello all. I am a Windows user, PC lover and proud iPod owner. Simply love the thing (I have the new 20Gig model) and have to agree with those who believe as I do, that it is simply the best player out there. I will concede it is terribly expensive for an MP3 player, but nothing else quite works as well as it or is as beautiful to operate.

Having said that, I wonder if Apple really meant for the mini iPod to be "entry-level?" I mean, it's using state-of-the-art hard drive and battery technology, has crammed the connectivity of the standard iPod into a smaller package and has wrapped it up in what looks to be an aluminum alloy skin, anodized at that. For me, this all points to a different market segment...the ultra-portable one where most flash players reside. I think Apple is positioning this product as their high-end offering...similar to the way the iPod rules the 10+Gig capicity hard drive segment.

Just my thoughts,

Arvin C

0roo0roo hit it on the head, everyone claiming the iPod is over priced in comparison to the competition should stop flaunting their ignorance...

The simple fact is no other player has the iPod's combination of size, capacity, and features deal with it.

Yep, size matters.

If a laptop is heavier than 6 lbs, I won't touch it. Under 5 lbs would be fantastic.
If a cell phone is thicker than 1", I won't touch it. 3/4" is fantastic.
For an MP3 player, about as big I'll go is the current crop of players with 1.8" drives. Anything bigger is out of the picture. The size of the mini OTOH is fantastic.
Etc.

Why does it matter? Well the common feature of all these units is that they're portable, and I actually carry them around with me.

APPLE is trying to get a MONOPOLY on the mp3 player market!! :Q

but seriously, i do think this is a little overpriced.

then again i havn't owned an mp3 player since my iomega hipzip (299, 40mb disks were $10) 😀

I agree 100%. I can't imagine owning anything other than an iPod from now on.
