Whats the price matter? Out of warranty is out of warranty. If I buy a $85k bimmer and it dies out of warranty, its still out of warranty. Life sucks. And fwiw you can replace the ipod batter yourself for $50 but thats really irrelevant.

Bah. Apple lawsuits are fairly common. It's the market group they target, uncomputer-savy and upwardly moble crowd.

After all they pay the premium for the Apple name.

And I bet that after the lawsuits would be all done, those people still buy Apple. Not that I blame them, I'd drop my PC in a second if I could get my hands on a Apple PowerMac G5.

Just another example of buyer beware. I think it's really sad that none of those sites that did the iPod disections early after it was released noticed the soldered (unreplacable) battery.

BTW I don't know if this is true in the US and Europe but in Canada if you make a purchase on Visa they automatically double your warranty so you could probably have them (Visa) replace the battery (pay the $99) for you (assuming you put your iPod on your CC). (Come to think of it I think MasterCard in Canada does this as well).

Yet another reason not to buy an iPod... other than the fact that it's grossly overpriced.

I'll give you the price factor, but would you trust yourself to take it apart for $50 and replace the battery? Unless you're a guru at mastering how to take them apart, this isn't the most fool proof way to fix it. I know I'm not going to trust myself to open up a unit that looks like it's not made to be re-opened.

Sure, apple says it's only $99 to replace the battery, but have you looked at what they charge you for shipping and handling? $29.99!

So really, by the time you get through all the bs, it's more like $140 or so. Not exactly a steal either.

Don't get me wrong, I have a 20 gig iPod, I'm just trying to do some reasoning. Personally I don't think the lawsuit is worthy, it's a 1 year warranty, which is what most things are, but generalizing it with a battery isn't exactly on the same level, which is probably why some of the apple buyers might be so pissed off.

Yeah I purchase everything on CC now just because of this. Purchased a retail Western Digital 250JB which only came with one year warranty but on my Visa it now has 2 years.

i have extended warranty on my credit card... but have you ever read what you need sometimes? Now, I generally keep all my receipts, albeit not as organized as i'd like, but if i had to, i could find it. I only know a handful of ppl like that. i've never had to use it, but i'm curious how they handle things w/ no "receipt" but something like a packing slip, can anyone comment on that?

i guess time will show if the 3rd gens have this "18 month" battery.

Dont defend apple. Those batteries were awful. My friend went thru hell to get it replaced. Why is it when a company puts out a product thats not tested, they get a bad rep, but apple is different? There is nothing special about the ipod except its looks. It plays music like every other player does. THere are far better players for less money on the market that I think look better. The only reason apple is in buisness is because of people like 0roo 0roo who ignore the obvious by comparing it to something completely irrelevant. When it takes a company to have mass media attention and a massive outcry to take action against a product they should have tested in the first place, its very good for pr. People should learn that because the ipod has become this status symbol and a must have device, you should still look into the subject and not ignore the facts. I currently am going to get an Ipod mini but only because im getting it on a discount, it uses a different battery than the defective ipods and its small. I DO plan on getting an extended warranty.

I bought mine for 169 and I love it. Agreed the battery thing sucks and I would not have bought it for more than $200.

What this means is that some law firm is going to get $17.5 million from Apple and I'm going to get a $25 dollar off my next iPod purchase coupon.

yup. oh yeah and ipods will be more expensive for all of us. if they were exploding i'd understand. what a waste of the justice system.

class action lawsuits benefit lawyers. can you imagine personally making almost 100 million from 1 case? i know partners who did in a tobacco lawsuit.

How could they? It's neither soldered or unreplaceable. Replacement iPod batteries, soldering not required.

I have no idea what unreplacable means. :) How do you plac, much less replac something!

Meanwhile, you scratch the living hell out of the case.
