Ipod & Iphone not connecting to wifi

For some reason all apple products have trouble connecting at my home wifi.

My router works just fine for the two laptops and desktop connected wirelessly. No problems whatsoever.

However, my iPod 3G and my brother's iPod 3g and his iPod 4 won't connect at all. My iPhone 3G has intermittent trouble connecting to the network but it at least will connect after I try for awhile. Once connected it's usually problem free but if I put it in sleep mode 75% of the time it will lose the connection again. It doesn't have any trouble seeing the router, but it can't connect to it and says "unable to connect to network."

I've tested the ipod and iphone at other locations and it connects to other wifi just fine. Again, all other computers at my house work fine.

Any ideas on any settings I can change?

I had to assign static ip addresses, dns server and default gateway to my son and daughters ipod touch to get them on our home network. For some reason the routers dhcp software could not give the devices an ip address.

What kind of router do you have? I know several ISP stock router's (Verizon specifically) that have issues with ianything. Stick a different router in and should fix things. Yeah, it has to do with the DHCP server not assigning IP's to them.

Its not just stock routers, I have an older Netgear A&B wireless router, and it is picky about what can connect to our wireless network.

My wifes emachine laptop connects fine, but my dell laptop will not connect - both have built in wireless.

The only solution I know, is to assign the device an ip address manually, or get a new wireless router. Since typing in an ip address manually is free, I'am holding on my old netgear router as long as possible.

Darn it...I had already switched my router. My other router was giving me headaches so I switched my router to this one. Though both are a few years old.

Thanks for the tip regarding static ip addresses...I will try this at home with my iphone and see if it makes a difference.

One other thing...in the networking screen, the ipod has a checkmark indicating it's connected to the network...however there's no wifi symbol at the top and when I check the settings screen there's no ip address or anything listed. What does that even mean?

It isn't able to pull an IP so it isn't utilizing the wireless.

What model router?

I've had that issue before as well. To rectify it I selected the option to "Forget this network" and then reconnected to it. Hope it can help you 🙂

My router model is a D-Link DI-624...

I tried clicking that "forget this network" trick, but it didn't help. I also tried setting the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 since that seemed to help some people on the internet, but that didn't work either.

Setting the static IP address seems to have helped my iphone connect a little easier, so thanks! Still has some trouble, but not as much. Of course my brother's ipods still don't work at all and have no IP address...

Strangely enough, tried to set a static ip address again and it solved all problems! Not sure what the deal was, but thanks Texashiker! You're the man
