I have an first gen 32 gb ipod and its maxed out in terms of storage and I was considering getting a 64 gb ipod.

The only situation where I would actually upgrade is if the new generation actually feels faster, better, etc.

Does anyone know a good answer (i know its pretty subjective.)

My understanding is that the latest iPod Touch using the same CPU and RAM as the iPhone 3GS. And you can find plenty of reviews out there that show that the 3GS launches apps quicker, and is more responsive (particularly under games).

Yes, it's much faster. My brother has a 2nd Gen whereas I have a 1st and it is noticeably faster. The apps don't lag as much and everything loads faster. Also, from what I've heard the newest one has an even faster CPU.

So, do only the 32/64gb versions have the newer specs? Also, what is the function of the mic or whatever else it is that is included only on the 32/64gb versions.

Looking to buy an 8gb version as a present so need to do some research I guess.

All iPod Touches are made the same. The 8/32/64GB versions all have the same features.

The 3rd gen iPod Touch has the same CPU/RAM as the 3GS meaning it's the FASTEST iPod Touch on the market. It has bluetooth, an onboard speaker, and controls for volume on the side. Also, the iPod Touch 3rd gen allows the use of the iPhone's microphone/headset combo.

Overall, it's the best call to buy the newest iPod Touch regardless of the size. Hope that helps!

EDIT: Oh.. I just looked at the Apple site, and apparently, the 8 GB is still the second gen? Hm.. Can someone confirm this?

The current 8GB iPod Touch is just a 2nd gen 8GB iPod Touch, except the price is lower and it's running iPhone OS 3.1 instead of 2.x. It's slightly faster than the iPhone 3G, but nowhere near as fast as the 3GS or the 3rd gen Touches.

Also compared to the 3rd gen Touches and the 3GS, it has half the RAM and a much less powerful graphics chip.

You are correct. The 3rd gen Touch is identical to 2nd gen EXCEPT for the 32/64gb versions, which have faster cpu/ram.

The 8GB is ESSENTIALLY the Second Gen. Jailbreaking wise there IS a difference. Blackra1n which just got released CANNOT JB the 3rd gen 8GB models beginning with MC. There IS a difference of some amount although its essentially the same model

Thanks for all the info!

Seems prices don't vary too much although once in a while a Best Buy 10% off coupon will come out that doesn't have ipods as an exception. May just use the apple store if I decide engraving is important enough.
