At apple.com you can select an education discount and get the 20G ipod for $269 and the 40g for $369. This includes free shipping and free engraving.

Apple has always had 10% for students. In fact its mentioned many times within anandtechs reviews like the one for 'a month with an apple'.

Actually, it is not quite a 10% discount. It is still probably the best deal out there if your in the market for an ipod

I'm not a student anymore, do they check to see if you're still enrolled somehow? If not, i'll be taking that nice little $30 discount.

first, it's highly unethical to say you're a student to get a discount. Do you still carry your college id around to get cheaper movie prices?
second, i think it's been discussed here, and someone tried to do what you said but failed. I can't find a thread correlating, but i remember someone attempting it, then failing.

I've never had them check anything, I give them my ID and they put the order through.

And yes I still carry my ID with me for cheaper movie tickets, that is when I actually am stupid enough to pay for a movie 🙁

It doesn't matter if Apple provides nice discount or not..
The fact is that if you are ordering from the states of California, Texas and Michigan (at least), you pay huge chunk of tax. It means that even if you the price of iPod is at $269.. the final price will be $299 due to tax...

You get discounts on practically everything if you're a student. Just purchased my 17" Powerbook 😀
Mmmmm..I wonder if my daughter wants to help me pick out a Mac mini for her to do her homework on?

Most of us pay over $100,000 for our education. The least we should get is a 10% discount and a couple bucks off of a movie ticket. I'm going to use my "educational" discount as long as I can.

save it man...

Paying $10 for a movie isn't fair by any standards!

it's too bad there's a limit to how much you can use the discount.. heh. well, i suppose that's a good thing, keeps me away from a powerbook I dont' need.

There's a limit?

Ha, I once stole a homeless guys money out of those cups to buy myself a coffee that I got a discount on using my student ID card even though I'm not a student.

I wouldn't have bought an Apple if it wasn't for the discount. Months ago my school was selling and still are, 15 inch powerbooks for $1799. Retail is $2499. One hell of a deal eventhough Apple just upgraded their Powerbooks.

I know IPODS are very popular now, but what's the appeal of them at $250-$350? Does it just play gigabytes worth of MP3s or does it do something else as well? I see MP3 players (with lower storage capacity) for significantly less.. and then there are cd players that can play mp3s. So is it the attractive packaging, the gigabytes of storage, compact design, and/or something else?
