First off, I am NOT an Apple guy. But my wife still uses her first generation iPod nano 4GB ( and to be honest it still works just like it did new ). I have a 5th generation iPod nano. We have one of those portable sound systems with an iPod mini dock, which the 1st gen is completely compatible with. However, my 5th gen is NOT compatible. I've run a few search strings on the internet for some kind of "5th gen to 1st gen adapter" and haven't really come up with anything. Are there any learned Apple folks out there who know if such a beast exists?

Thanks so much!

If the sound system is older, it might have to do with the pinout. Apple slightly changed the pinouts/internals I think with gen... 3 or 4. IIRC, some docks were affected because they did things that weren't strictly by the book but still worked, and it was cheaper to do.

Apple changed how things worked and it broke compatibility with some older docks.

This is all based on something that I read once, so there are probably some holes in my recollection.

I was under the impression that apple change the firmware on later devices. For example, my ipod classic, while it will work on my logitech MM50 speakers and charge from it my sons 4th gen nano wont. It actually say it on the screen. Why? If apple can program the FW to say that what the hell is the difference? My iphone 3gs and 4 says simular crap. Also, my big (forgot the brand) kickass speaker works great but wont charge more recent products. I think apple just likes to shake shit up every now and then.

I think you are correct Sir. Thus my frustration at Apple! I was hoping that out there somewhere was a pin conversion adapter so that I could at least play music with my older (but still very functional) sound system. I'm not asking for full charging capabilities or anything, just play music.....

Ack...
