iPhoto question

Is it possible to just keep photos in a folder sceme of your own choosing on an external drive and have iphoto point to but not import photos? But still cache thumbnails and such?

I've got about 91 GB in my iphoto right now and I think I need to do something different, either that or try different software.

Also it would be sort of cool if I could make meta albums, like they didn't actually contain the photos just points to the actual photo. Maybe that's what it does and I just dont' know.

You can have the entire iPhoto Library reside on a different disk if you want:

You can also have your originals reside in a different folder heirarchy than the iPhoto Library.
