Then you should look at the posts in the apple.com or at&t forums from back when the 3G came out in July, and go from there. There were plenty of negative posts then. Now, not so much.

Well that's how it usually goes doesn't it? Takes a little while to every to get accustomed to it and work out the kinks.

just be sure that you want to stay with AT&T for another 2 years....

is ATT really that bad? i've only been w/ sprint prior to getting an iphone and my experience w/ ATT isn't bad and the 3G service has improved a lot since i got the phone.

AT&T isn't bad. In the 6 years that I've been with them I've only had one issue with the network, and it was on their end and was fixed by the next day. Generally though, the coverage is excellent and the service is good.

While I can't speak for other cell phone companies, I know for a fact that ATT has been upgrading and expanding their 3G networks. When I first got my iphone 3G, the tv den downstairs was a dead zone with no cell phone reception at all, now I have 90% 3G coverage and haven't had a dropped call down there since. The only reason I can think of is that they're really working on expanding their coverage areas.

People hate ATT not for the service but for their monopolistic, screw the customer pricing policies and other PR issues (like the wiretapping stuff). ATT's service is pretty much on par with any other GSM carrier in the US. I use Sprint and have had really good speed and customer service with them - ATT is actually the one thing keeping me from switching to iPhone but I may have to cause I can't hold out any longer.

You will WITHOUT QUESTION need to get a data plan. There is no way around this.

Also, your number WILL NOT change. I've had the same number since 1999 and have even changed carriers.

Yea.. but doesn't every cellphone company have monopolistic pricing policies? Text messaging is the worst, and the fact that you have to pay to tether AND to receive data on the same device is ridiculous, yet they ALL do it.

I tether with my iPhone, with the same plan, and I use the aim app running in the background to text. I'm not a big text user though. I average about 150 - 200 a month.

Yea.. I just haven't found a solution to texting that doesn't cost other people more. I have friends that get charged MMS prices (granted this is due to them being on the antiquated Nextel iDEN network). I can only tether by being jailbroken, and if I wanted to do it legally AT&T is talking about adding a surcharge for that.

It was the same with Verizon when I was with them. $30/mo for unlimited texts, another $30/mo to tether, $30/mo for data.. it's ludicrous.

Sorry to derail the thread.

I love my iPhone and whole heartedly recommend it, but I would definitely check out the AT&T coverage in your area.

My wife and I have a 1st Gen iPhone with 2.2 jailbroken (Winterboard themes are Amazing). The only reason we didn't get the iPhone 3G is because the data & txt plans are more expensive. Also, I can find a WiFi hotspot just about anywhere.

We can't live without our iPhones, we use them everyday. And the App Store is just incredible.
