iPhone w/ GPS Navigation?

Can anyone confirm whether or not the iPhone 4S (or iOS 5 on any iPhone) will support full turn-by-turn GPS navigation?

I currently own an iPhone 3GS, so I am aware that there is some GPS functionality, but when I say "full" I mean I am hoping it can replace, say, a TomTom device and talk me through my driving. Basically, I want it to announce "turn left in 400 feet" while I'm driving.

Yes, but not natively. At least not turn by turn with text to speech. You will have to buy an app in the AppStore. In fact, there is a TomTom app that I believe is identical to an actual TomTom product. Some of them are pretty pricey.

The Google Maps native app will give you turn by turn directions, but not real time-text to speech like what you want.

mapquest has a free turn by turn voice direction for iphone. not bad

for google nav i have 2 phones where the navigation app is always loosing GPS signal. with tomtom and navigon for iOS it downloads all 1.5GB or so of maps to your phone so you don't have to worry about losing signal

I suppose my original post should have been:

"Can anyone confirm whether or not the iPhone 4S (or iOS 5 on any iPhone) will *natively* support full turn-by-turn GPS navigation?"

Does that mean the answer is "no"?

Does the iPhone support GPS functions directly via GPS satellite reception (using stored maps data), or must there be an active cell connection for it to work?

The good paid apps have stored maps. The free ones like MapQuest need mobile data to fetch maps as you move.

Both kinds of apps will use the iPhone's A-GPS to accurately determine current location.

The big advantage of owning a smartphone is that you can get an app that will do most anything. Why does it have to be native?

I understand the OP. When I had the iPhone 4 I used the free Mapquest app for voice guided navigation, and while it was nice to get that functionality from an app, I had to use their inferior map display to make use of it (one of the reasons I went back to Android. Google Maps & Nav is very nice).

Sometimes it's just nicer to have built in functionality.

If you're looking for a turn by turn app for the IP, check out MotionX. It's 99 cents plus cost per month or per year for the voice turn by turn. Works excellently. MotionX gives you a free months worth of voice turn by turn. This app has finally made the built in GPS useful for me. I like it better than my Garmin car GPS.
