iPhone vs Android

No this isn't a thread about how much better one is than the other...

I think it's just great that we've FINALLY reached the point where iPhone has a legitimate competitor. For so long iPhone was clearly superior to every other smartphone on the planet... only in the last year has Android caught up.

How many features of the iPhone4 are the direct result of Android phones? How will the next release of Android be impacted by the features of iPhone?

One thing is for sure though... we the consumers win win win.

I wouldn't call it a direct result. I would think Apple has its roadmap for iPhone and iOS planned out for the next 2-3 years.

Android wasn't really a serious competitor til Droid 1/2.0 which was like nov-dec last year. By then, most of the features were probably pretty well decided on. What features specifially are you thinking of?

I like the combo of my Android phone + my iPod Touch.The Android will probably never become something I'd use as a PMP, but it's a solid phone and Android 2.2 is fun to mod and tinker with.

I'm kind of wanting Android for my phone, an iPod Touch for my music and a Windows Tablet.

I just can't justify spending that much money on an MP3 player when I would only use it infrequently.

On a side note....where is Ubuntu in all this? Its slim enough to run on an N1 or Galaxy...why not for tablets?

You really think Apple develops it's next gen devices in a 2-3 year vacuum? I'd say thats pretty unlikely.

I can't imagine having a smartphone AND an iPod... I just can't imagine enough situations where I would need an iPod.. maybe I need some enlightenment... what does the iPod offer over an Android or iPhone?

No contract. If you had an iPhone and had apps for it, but decided taht you weren't using the 3G enough to warrant the monthly fee, you could get a dumbphone and an iPod Touch.

Or, with regards to Android, the iPod Touch offers much more in regards to music playback than Android does. I think the simple answer for why there is no Android iPod Touch is because Google doesn't have an answer to iTunes. Regardless of how you feel about the program, you can't deny that it is a one stop shop. Library, syncing, music/movies/books/podcasts/apps all in the store. One place to buy your content, one place to keep your content, all with one account.

It would be nice if they (Apple) supported more video codecs though.

It's more of a licensing issue right now when it comes to iTunes right? I don't understand why there aren't other online shops for getting movies... Blockbuster can now... but other than that?

Zune has music (and I think movies and TV shows now), there are other solutions, but last I heard, iTunes was the number one seller of digital music, and about to pass CD sales as well I think. It has been around for years, music you bought for your 3rd gen iPod will still work on your iPhone 4, but it won't work on your Zune (unless you upgraded to the iTunes Plus version I think).

It is a media juggernaut, and hard to replace with third party software, at least for most people. As good as DoubleTwist may or may not be, unless Google actually releases their own iTunes competitor, with store then I don't think we will see an Android iPod Touch. Regardless of any other merits or issues with the idea.

To me the music isn't an issue.. I have no problems getting whatever music I want on my Android... the problem I have is with Movies and TV Shows... the only thing I know of is Blockbuster... which is a painful app, and lame selection.

I don't think they develop in a vacuum, but to me it doesn't look like anything they're doing is reactionary.

Number one period - no "digital" qualifier needed. They passed up WalMart some time ago.

The modified an existing CPU to yield the A4. It isn't a completely custom job from the ground up like their press releases make it out to be. The physical design is done completely in house. Past that, bog standard radios and flash and all that.

Well the Moto Droid I have is Verizon, and to me Verizon >>> AT&T. But I loooooove a ton of games and apps from the Apps store. Outside of a few apps and a few games the Markerplace is real patheric. When the iPhone comes to Verizon I might end up getting it, but as it stands I'm with the best mobile provider in my area and I have the best PMP/mobile gaming device with my Touch. Also the Touch offers MUCH better battery life because it's not a phone.

It wasn't until we had nice software and hardware (Motorola Droid 1) where we could say we have a real iPhone competitor.

If I had money to burn, I would own an iPhone, an Android flagship phone, an iPad, an iPod, a WM7 phone, and who knows what else. I'm a bit of a gadget junkie that can't afford to be.
Right now, I am content on a Droid 1 running ROM of the week with my trusty Creative Zen PMP.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, a Kindle.
And I am not counting how many form factors of notebooks and netbooks I want.

but there will never be an "iPhone killer". The iPhone is a good phone and it has its market.

You really can't pit the iphone against an android phone because, iphone, is an iphone. Only apple makes it. Android is an os and has many manufacturers making phones based on android os, which is probably why there is not one single uber kickass android phone that does everything. I own several android phones, latest being samsung vibrant, and each one has its pluses and minuses. the camera on my behold II was great, not so much on the vibrant, I could go on and on but you get the point.

pitting iphone and android phones is exactly like pitting mac computers and pcs together. You really cant as only apple makes a mac and 1000 companies can make a pc. If pc was an actual company they we could compare, but its not.

That being said, yes, it is nice to see the start of some viable options amongst phones. My vibrant would be near perfect if the FM radio was available and if it had a flash, but, if it did, then why would manufactures keep making new phones.

I think the perfect Android phone would be the EVO 4g with Galaxy S internals. Minus the GPS issues. I've used all of the custom UI's and sense UI is by far my favorite.

Unfortunately no such device exists. Maybe a few revisions later we'll get that Android device.

I just downloaded one the greatest apps for my DX - "gstrings" by cohortor ???

... yesterday when I was sitting there shaping my sound for a show tonight, my bass sounded a little out of tune. I didn't want to pull the 9v from my pedal so i thought i'd try the Android Market and came up with the above tuner and it works great

That and a pair of Terminator shoes I bought yesterday really made my day: besides a few other things. Member when Reese just was in that department store after just traveling in time and he was looking for a pair of shoes, those are something like what I bought, heh
