I've got a first gen iPhone. I love it, the only problem is I'm always saying "WHAT"? The volume is just too damn low. Is there any way to crank it up without hacking it?

There's no way to increase it that I know of. For music, there's a sound limiter (presumably to avoid lawsuits). It's under Settings -> iPod -> Volume Limit. You would want it to be off.

Beyond this, you can take calls with the headphones using the built-in microphone and it's a lot easier to hear people. It's nice not to hold the headset the whole time. It's a lot easier to hear people particularly with the (rather expensive) Shure iPhone in-ear headphones... you can hear people really well with these.

But to hack the volume setting louder... no, I'm not sure how to do this.

As of now I've resorted to using the headphones. The sound volume and quality with them is great, they just look sorta silly. :(

i think you can increase volue with jailbreak and add the app. for it

It did nothing for my iphone....

See that's what I read on a lot of forums. I'm not opposed to jailbreak, but if it's not providing a substantial upgrade I'm perfectly fine with my phone being "stock".
