I think the 3G issues is as much the network as it is the phone and the signal strength meter lags so it may seem that the bars are moving even though the phone hasn't. I do like how the phone seems snappier with the new update. Much like the way it was before the 2.0 was released.

Haven't noticed lag appearing after I updated.. roughly 100 texts after updating.

Is anyone else's clock kind of off? I just noticed it yesterday, it may have been there before, but the clock in the world clock and the clock that is responsible for timestamping phone calls and text messages is off by five hours. Strangely, the alarm clock and the time on the bar at the top work fine???

What time zone do you have the world clock set to? It's called world clock for a reason.:p

Uhm. Well either Apple changed how it perceives the network, or they did indeed fix some of the 3G issues. I now have 5 full bars at home, something i'd yet to see since I got the phone.

Gonna go check downstairs as well where I usually get 1 bar.

I hope they didn't just change the bars, to try & fool people. I put mine in test mode, to see what the rf reading was before the download. I had between a -93 to -90 before the update. I'm downloading it now.

No change in RF after the install. Tomorrow I'll see if mail & Safari still cause lockups.

I plug it in, Windows gives me 3 "bongs" and then it tries to install drivers, which I don't have.

Put your phone in DFU mode and restore it with the new firmware.

DFU Mode

If that doesn't work, use a different computer. The exact same thing happened to me when I tried to put 2.0.1 on mine. Got half way through the restore and it gave me an error code 6 or something, and was then stuck on the screen you describe.

My computer would no longer recognize my phone, but for some reason other computers would. Eventually I used my roomates computer, put the phone in DFU mode, and did a restore. Now it seems to work, and my computer recognizes it again.

I wont be doing anymore firmware updates unless it is something major. (like fixing the shitty 3G reception problems and dropped calls during 3G/2G handoff)

I would always restore before updating a jailbroken phone. Restore, then upgrade. That is, unless you unlocked as well. If you unlocked, I would stay put.

To locking the computer as you leave the phone updating when you go to bed at night:beer:

fvking thing had some massive failure and was in some recovery mode when I left for work today.

If it nuked my info....blood will be shed.

well the phone restored itself properly. Some apps seemed out of order but it went well. APparently the backups backup most everything but restorable music and videos which took forever to reload for some reason but all is good.

Yea.. there should be a sync to your computer method of backing up your phone's data (other than the backup that happens now through iTunes).

It should be something that you can keep multiple days on, and restore just a single apps record, rather than your whole phone.

A time machine thing would be great;) (which you could technically accomplish)
It's restoring right now so we'll see what happens.

Is that better than you got with 2.0.1?

Slightly, not by a noticeable margin though.

Just grabbed an iPhone3G yesterday, and I have to say I've been impressed so far. I have 3G pretty much all over my area. A few little dead zones, but nothing major. Pandora is great to listen to while I'm driving to work, although I'm quite disappointed that they are going to have to shut down with this crappy new royalty law. :(

Anyway, I love it, and I'm super glad that I got one. Plus, since I waited it was painless to get. Took me about 20 mins. I walked in the Apple Store, said I needed one.. the specialist went in the back and got it and had me activated in no time. :D I know they had hiccups at the beginning, but it looks like they've gotten it turned around.
