Iphone simcard

I might want to switch out to another phone later. However I heard the simcard they give u only works with the iphone

The iPhone AT&T SIM card works fine in any GSM phone.

It's sort of the opposite. The iPhone requires one of the newer SIM cards - otherwise some features act a bit strange on it... particularly SMS's and voicemail. So while the iPhone SIM works in any phone, some older SIMs don't work well in the iPhone.
