Is there any way to get the Iphone data plan without getting a 2 year contract? Would using the Iphone Software unlock help at all instead of activating a new service?

Yes, the 2 year contract is required. I had AT&T before and I had to renew my contract. Not sure if unlocking it would help.

I'm not sure how that works, exactly. Unless it triggers a contract extension when you put the SIM in the iPhone (which probably has a clause in the iPhone documentation that states you agree to the extension when you activate the phone).

Basically, if you unlocked it, you don't need the 2 year contract and you can still se the iphone with your at&t sim card

Yes, Xellos, is right. If you unlock it, no 2 year requirement - just use your AT&T sim.

But if you don't unlock... you can't use the iPhone at all unless you activate it - there's a picture on the screen when you turn it on saying "Activate on iTunes" and that's it. And if you plug it into iTunes to activate it, you will have to choose a 2 year extension. There's no other choices (unless you fail the credit check... which you won't because you are a current customer).

what if the fscker wont activate.. then how does one unlock it. I am a current ATT customer. The thing is that i dont care about visual voicemail, but i could just easily unlock and let her rip.. or should i just get into the 2yr contract.

I understand that after unlocking it, you can use an existing SIM card. But if I want the Iphone Data plan (unlimited data on EDGE, 200 SMS a month for 20 bucks), wouldn't they still make me sign some 2 year contract since I don't have it on my existing plan currently.

Add the media net data to your existing plan. $20 for unlimited data, dont know if it includes any text/mms messaging.
