IPhone Push notification?

Guys i got a question for you. First let me say i bought a palm pre last week and already took it back. Great OS/ Crappy phone!!! I could stand in one spot and the thing would flucuate between 4 bars EVDO, 1-2 bars 1X, and 1-2 roaming. The signal strength on this thing was all over the place......and it didn't just happen in one spot...it happened all over the place. I wasn't the only one having this issue. If you go to precentral.net.....plenty others are having the same issue. Anyways kind of bumbed because sprint has such a good deal for $99 unlimited everything and when the signal strength was strong the data throughput was awesome.

So anyways i digress. Looking into the new iphone about to be released. My big quibble about the iphone is the lack of multitasking. Thats a MAJOR drawback..that and overpriced at&t 🙂. Anyways my question for you all is how does that push notification thing on the new iphone os 3.0 work? Can i now (kind of) still have multiple applications running so i will be able to get IM (Yahoo messenger) while i have a browser or something else open?

If on the Pre reception were much better or if it was on a better network (verizon). *sigh*

Not sure about the push, but multitasking will be allowed if the app developer supports it properly. The phone will now be able to keep things running fully in the background, but it's up to the app developer to make their program work with it properly. Most apps won't have to do much if anything new (like AIM and yahoo messenger) but things like pandora might want to code a way to control the app while it's in the background.

Yeah it's new w/ 3.0 unless you jailbreak your iphone. Backgrounder is a 3rd party app that lets you run things in background but requires a jailbreak. It works pretty good but it's a bit unstable. Now that apple will natively support something proper it should work almost flawlessly. They claim it's taken so long to natively support it because there were security concerns, which I'm not sure I buy. Doesn't matter though as we're a week away from having it.

What that means is that a server can push messages to your phone while the phone app is not running. IM clients are a good candidate for this framework but the apps have to be written to take advantage of it. I know AIM will have software out soon to support it, I don't know about yahoo.

I was pretty sure it did. Many of the things I've read included it as a new feature. Ah well, doesn't matter as I'll have it regardless.

Super, then when somebody asks for opinions on phones you can chime in. This post was specifically about iphone push notifications and multitasking.

When I had Tmo Sidekick3 It feels like multitasking and the push notifaction is nice. I am suprised no one mentioned about Sidekick anymore. Last week I made a switch to ATT and got iPhone 3G I dont feel it is multitasking and lack or limit with push notifaction.

Well you could have also said Android or BlackBerry, too.

I have no experience with either so a post from someone who knows more would be superior.

Super, then when somebody asks for opinions on phones you can chime in. This post was specifically about iphone push notifications and multitasking.

The post was also about disappointment with one Sprint phone, so I think a comment about a different Sprint phone that might be more suitable is appropriate. Particularly when earlier responses about the iphone as a substitute indicate it also lacked the desired features.
