So I have a friend who will sell me his iPhone now for $150.

Can I just put my SIM in and not use the data?

what network are you on?
do you have a data plan already?
if not on at&t you will have to unlock the iphone

I'm on AT&T. Don't have data.

I plugged my SIM in it today and it worked.

Just a word of warning but some networks will charge you more for using a iphone since they use more bandwidth then others.
