I don't honestly care about MMS that much. I would prefer to have C&P so that when I do get the random MMS every once in a while, I can copy the password to put into AT&T's stupid website.

We'll see tomorrow what happens, but I'm betting on: (1) Cut/Copy & Paste and (2) a form of background processing.

I don't think they'll do push notifications, and I don't think they'll allow full background tasks, but I think it will be a merge of the two somehow.

Maybe I am missing something, but why the hell does a person want cut and paste? I can understand some scenarios, but I couldn't give a crap really.

Still no SMS or MMS support, I doubt push will be added...what a load of crap this phone is turning out to be as more and more time passes.

Hell, I'd be +++++++happy if they would allow you to choose a different sound for email notifications without having to jailbreak the damned thing. Even that seems to be a problem for Apple.

Ironically enough, I care about Cut and Paste, but couldn't give two shits about MMS (The iPhone has had SMS support from the first gen, not sure what your referring to when you say it doesn't). Push works with Mobile Me and Exchange, where else would you like to see it implemented?

I'd love to have MSN messenger running in the background. Even without it my #1 priority would be to change email notification sound. If I had just that, I wouldn't even jailbreak the phone anymore.

All I care about is C&P and a better email client (easier to switch between accounts, SEARCH for chrissakes), maybe some safari stability improvements and any tweaks that can eke out a bit more battery life out of the 3g. Backgrounding/multitasking would be nice, but I loathe to see what it does to battery life.

I would use cut and paste but not MMS.

I would like running background apps, but I can only imagine the outcry about how 3.0 ruined the battery life ("Um, that is what happens to your battery when you run two apps at the same time!"). 😉

Turning this into the official thread to keep things in one place 🙂

I believe the thread title is incorrect - the press conference can't be at both 11am PST and 1 pm EST. I believe it's actually at 10 am on the west coast.

mms would be nice. I hate the awful solution they have for it now. I get the message, I have to go to a site, remember a cryptic password, it's an awful solution. not that I use it much, or it's a must for me, it would be nice for them to fix this.

the push notification they promised us a eyar ago would be great.

I have cut and paste with clippy from cydia and I have never used it, I installed it, but I think that they could work around it with better use of context menus.

for example. I would like to copy and paste texts to other people, another solution would be just letting me forward the message.
I would like to copy and paste a link I'm on in safari to email or text... give me a context menu that says send this link to an sms or email
There are ways around copy and paste and I think it's kind of a pointless addition. I know that with clippy which seems to be used similarly to how Kevin Rose described the functionality, I find myself selecting text accidentally and it becomes a pain in the ass when I'm trying to fix a character in a word and then I accidentally select a section of text and don't realize it, then I start typing, it writes over that selection, and there is no undo button. I hope they are able to make it easy to use, or something I can turn off because I honestly don't see what the fuss is about.

One big item:
Some developers have said they like to have other business models other than the current sell-once model that?s in the App Store. What are some? Subscriptions for magazine developers, additional levels for game devs, and eBook devs, who want to sell one app and sell eBooks inside the app. They?re supporting ALL of these things now with In App Purchase.

Now: Peer to Peer?

WAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Accessory Support: "Scott says there are thousands upon thousands of developers building accessories for the iPhone, iPod touch. With the iPhone 3.0 SDK, developers are going to be able to create applications that work directly with their proprietary accessories."

Can you imagine the possibilities?? iPod Touch car receivers...gaming controllers...oh man oh man oh man OH MAN! 😀

Jason Chen:

Everything is in there?pinch and zoom, custom annotations, satellite views, location tracking and location tracking.

Jason Chen:

Many developers have asked Apple to use Google Maps inside of their application. And it?s here. The Maps app can now be used as a public API and be embedded directly into any app.

Turn By Turn is now allowed! YEA!

But, you'll have to bring your own map. 🙂

Now, they're talking about push.

As expected, they brought up battery life:

By using Apple?s push notifications, battery life only dropped by 23% when an IM app is ?open? in the background, listening for messages.

Jason Chen:
In game voice chat is also one of the various APIs now open, as is iPod library access, proximity sensor, audio recorder, battery API, streaming audio and video, data detectors, text selection (oh??? is this for copy and paste??) UI alert view, sake API (for rumble) and GPS lingo.

Jason Chen:
EA is going to have in-app commerce, having you buy items for the Sims in the App Store directly from the game for $0.99 each.

Oh dear lordy it begins. It's kind of neat that you can buy things in apps and have it go through the app store. This is gonna be a huge source of revenue.

edit: Huge question: What is apple's cut going to be on something bought within a program? Like, say you buy a couch for $.99 within The Sims? Still the same or?

Re: Sims 3
For example, playing music from the stereo in the game lets you play music back from YOUR music library (from the 3.0 SDK API).

Cool. We can now play audio from the songs on your iPhone?

Yup!

Boy, the iPod/iPhone is going to crush the PSP & Nintendo DS now...imagine all of the third-party game controllers that are going to come to the market! As soon as they make one with PSP-style buttons and a built-in battery pack, it's gonna be all over

Dear Crutchfield:

Please make an iPod/iPhone-compatible car receiver with the new accessory dev system. Put in a swivel dock so I can use the iPod/iPhone as a touchscreen to control music. And hook up to the radio. And make Bluetooth calls through the speakers.

kthx!

"Next is LifeScan, a Johnson&Johnson company in glucose monitoring. "

I was thinking about medical uses wrt the accessory api. Blood pressure, glucose, etc.

I can see this thing turning into one of those Star Trek devices the doctors carry around

Next up, Phaser App!

Turn by turn is good news. Hopefully Tom Tom or Garmin can release their app soon.

They haven't announced mms or c&p yet, but I don't really have much use for either.
