The iPad battery is massive - according to Gizomodo (I think it was Gizmodo), its capacity is 5x that of the iPhone.

I think what's interesting though is that N97 users still talk about their amazing 2-3 day battery life. That boggles me as it is a 3.5" screen and so is the iPhone and the N1/Droid is close enough at 3.7". I still think the OS itself uses a lot more power. Then again with a lot of data always being synced I'm guessing that is the main power draw. Part of the problem is the Android battery usage doesn't tell you how much the 3G/2G radio uses. I think it's a lot different leaving your phone on a static image with the screen consistently on versus surfing the internet, and even browsing the least graphically challenging sites... and just simulating data pulling (or maybe downloading)

What's the battery capacity on the N97? It was a bigger phone, right? Might have a higher capacity battery. My old Palm Treo 750 ran for days and days, despite a decent size screen, mostly thanks to its beefy 1800mAh battery.

With my Droid, if I had it just sitting on my desk (which meant syncing with gmail and exchange, updating twitter every 5 minutes, weather and stocks every 15, probably some other services I'm forgetting), it would last forever. It could stream pandora with barely a dent too (assuming the screen was off). What really pulled the battery every time was the screen.

1500mAh. Droid and N1 have 1400mAh. Less than 10% difference in capacity but the battery life of the two systems is totally different. I gotta charge everyday with the Droid/Milestone. I feel like I could make it half way through day 2, but I'd probably die around lunchtime.

fwiw, i can switch between powerpoint, word, excel, web browser (two windows with 3 tabs each if i use opera 9 and 10 at the same time), have music playing (two songs at once if i use wmp and s2p at same time) and it will start to stutter. this has been available to me since i got the phone last year. oh, i forgot google maps and youtube. im glad google maps finally got the text fields to allow me to paste into them, it was annoying before that.

bullshit, do you know how many 1g/2g Touches & 1/2/3g iPhones are out there? Calculate that times $10. Apple would make MORE money offering multitasking to all iPhone/Touch owners. Because many won't buy a new phone. But the majority would have no problem dropping $10 bucks. If Apple did this to make more $$$ they're stupid as shit, because I'm not buying a new device, and nobody I know is. But I would pay $10 to upgrade my Touch as would most people I know who have one.

They have 9% with WinMob, but are "rebooting" they platform, meaning they essentially starting over at zero. That 9% will shrink was WinMob is phased out and most likely will be eaten up by RIM and Symbian as WinMob caters to mostly corporate customers. I don't think WP7 will be the choice of many corporations.

iPhone is at 15% on one carrier. If they go to Verizon, it's game over.

There are better phones than the iPhone on every single carrier. Going to Verizon(or even if it was suddenly available on all four carriers) won't significantly increase iPhone sales. Everyone who wants an iPhone already has one.

Hardly game over.

While I would say that you could argue it is "avg" in raw specs, I still think one can make a compelling argument it is right at - or near - the top of the list in user experience and overall usability.
 
I don't disagree. It really depends on the user's needs. The Iphone UI looks fantastic and is incredibly easy to use. For some people that is what matters. I'm a power user so I need as many options and customization ability as possible. I need to be able to change lots of settings and tweak stuff.

I understand some apps and stuff not being able to be done on older gen models, but some of Apple's stuff is total BS. There's no reason the 3G can't multitask, as I can do it jailbroken. There's also no reason the 3G couldn't do the voice dialing and such as there's 3rd party apps that do voice recognition fine. Some are legit, but those are a couple that are blatant attempts to make you upgrade.
 
OS 4.0 can do anything Jailbreak cant do except that with jailbreaking 3G and backgrounder will do wonders for 3G that the OS 4 lacks for 3G

Good article. Thanks. The loss of features already on my ancient WM5 phone from 2005 is one reason why I will sit out WP7 this year. There is no way I plan on going backwards. I also hate Apple's itunes so an iPhone is a non-starter. Andriod is alien to me. That means I will be using this ancient phone for at least another year or so.
 
The thing that irks me more about the iPhone than anything else is the new feats they're going to as far as development is concerned, and how they're stating only programs written in C, C++, or Obj C are legal for the App Store. This is total BS and a very good reason why Apple struggles to have good relationships with developers.

This pretty much kills the C#/Mono and Actionscript to iPhone compilers out there.

Doubtful, there are people that hate AT&T, or are stuck in a contract with Verizon. While I don't think when Apple's iPhone'y device pops up in Verizon it will have Apples % doubled. It will make an impact. I have almost zero doubt as soon as Verizon releases this phone. It will be their best selling phone in a short time. It doesn't matter there are more capable smartphones out there. The iPhone is a jack of all trades and smokes the others when it comes to available apps and accessories. A 10% jump when they hit Verizon doesn't sound unreasonable to expect at all.

Apple's at 15% with one phone on one carrier. RIM has a dozen phones on every carrier and gives phones away and still only have 9% more. That speaks volumes on how popular the iPhone is. When Verizon gets it Apple will easily take the #2 spot from RIM. They won't ever catch Symbian. But #2 for basically 2 phones on 2 carriers will be unmatched. Symbian has hundreds of devices world wide.

If it was a jack of all trades then it wouldn't have to be jailbroken and they have to make tons of accessories for it cus it lacks many things that other phones come with or at least give you the option to do. Apple is not a company of options, their way or the highway.

Yea, good thing no one has to root their android phones...sigh.

Dont you have to root a Nexus 1 to even get apps to install to an SD card to get past the small storage issue? Oh yeah, you also need to root to get themes. Too bad people only moan about having to JB iphones to do that.

as much as I love to pick on iPhone users...its not a bad phone at all. its great that Apple is finally giving it a much needed update.

Yes rooting does free up a lot of things on Anroid phones but they are more customizable and more up to date than iPhones. I would love to have access to Apple's app store on my myTouch! But I'm glad that Google doesn't restrict apps like Apple does.

My point is that both platforms have good things and bad things. Its just like any other product out there. If there weren't differences, this forum would be full of people bitching about the lack of differences!!

Relax guys...they are just cell phones. Use what suits your needs and don't worry so much about what the other guys are doing.

PS: Apple still sucks 😛

I never touted or even brought up Android at all or even said it's the best anything but it's a much better mobile OS if you want more freedom and customization out of the box and I don't condone hacking any phone to add features that should have been there already.

it's different, don't know exactly why as I can't get one Apple hater who has a Android to explain to me why rooting is acceptable but JB'ing is total fucking crap. I would love to hear some reasoning from one.
