Did you actually read the article?

(1) not openly accessible
(2) not synced to PC
(3) not a full record of every location since phone activation, but a limited cache

The point is it IS still tracking you, and it IS accessible. Common sense here. There's been no such thing as privacy since the beginning of the computer age.

Isn't Google's location services opt-in? Or am I missing something.

Also, aguy who created a program to see the location data on Android phones has this: https://github.com/packetlss/android-locdump

How to disable: Find Settings -> Location & Security -> Use wireless networks and uncheck it.
This removes the files on 2.3 devices, my 2.2 device keeps the files but stops updating them. Other versions are unknown at this moment.

I don't understand what the big deal about this is if one looks at the facts. Anyone even remotely paying attention to IT news and familiar with their phones knew about collection of location data.

I don't want to link the fox news report that made a big deal about this because they made up a story just to run it with the iphone tracking story, BS is about a "device that cops can use to extract the locations from your smartphone simply by being in bluetooth range". They went on to allude that it occurs without your consent and bypasses all password lock and security measures.

I installed the Android app to verify this, nothing is stored on my phone since I always had the location services disabled. I run 2.3 and none of the GPS data is stored either.

Disabling the location services on the iphone should have the same effect as well and unless it doesn't, the story is hoax.

who cares. get used to it and stop living in the 80's.

Its comments like this that really disturb me. I mean, really, you're completely OK surrendering all your privacy?

Regardless, for the iPhone, there's an easy way to disable it. You just keep a firm grip on the phone at all times.

where is that setting page? im fairly new to android, i havent come across that one yet. ive had the wireless location off since i got the phone and only have the gps on when im using it, but only for battery purposes, not really paranoid about tracking.

all the people that say its a negative just because the cops could use it to track/ link you to a crime need to realize the opposite is true as well. the data could exonerate you as easily as convict you.

I think it should be under Settings>Locations & Security.

Also, Google provides you a dashboard to see all the info it has on your account. www.google.com/dashboard

Go to Google Latitude section and you can see all the cool location stats, maps everything, if you had locations services turned on.

yes, i don't do anything or go anywhere that millions of others don't do every single day, its nothing....afraid some men in black are going to show up at your door or what? lol
what are you afraid of? Do you care where i'm at, what i'm doing? if not then my point is obvious, if so you wont hear about anything out of the ordinary.

The people that really crack me up are those who Twitter and FB everything their doing then turn around and talk like privacy advocates lol.

Privacy is an illusion in this day and age.

Since my life isn't an episode of Dexter, I really don't care.

I haven't murdered anyone or cheated on my wife since I started using smartphones. I'll be fine.

but the thing is twitter and facebook, you waive certain things once you go on there and start talking. you realize the minute you post something on the internet, you give up privacy. surfing is different. this is like anonymous collection which... im not pushing a button to give my location everytime. geolocation tweets are WAY different from this.

I don't, and I'm equally disturbed by the people who do this. I usually defriend, don't friend, or hide them on FB when they do this.

People's lack of concern for their privacy and personal lives is extremely disturbing, and people don't realize how foolish they're being.

While I'm not massively pleased about anyone logging my movements I can see why my carrier needs to, and I can see why Google needs to (if I'm using its mapping).

I'm not sure why Apple needs it though, are they developing their own mapping service?

With Android it is opt-in, as previously stated, during the set-up process. It can be disabled at any time in the settings after that.

Don't see what the big deal is tbh. People happily post half-naked pictures of themselves on Facebook on a daily basis but god forbid if anybody knows where they are! If anybody wants to know where i am they are free to ask btw.
